most of the time you are right about this kiind of shiz....I tried to make a hoodseal for a roundie out of the same stuff as a square...

seemed as though the channel was a differnt depth????

just my experience......

you need to fill the channel w/ flatbar gasket first

So do they sell something that does not require that you use the flatbar gasket first?

Yes, I use Neoprene/EPDM/SBR Rubber, #8694k87 from McMaster Carr. It has worked flawlessly. It is closed cell and has great density and compression characteristics for this particular use. Holds the hood real nice with no slip.

I tried that, and I think it sorta sucks. Yeah, it compresses great, and seems to seal somewhat okay. But it has memory....after only 1 week, I had a groove in it.
Now, after 2 months, it is ready to be replaced. (Aftermarket hood, aftermarket hood hooks and latch - so I probably latch a bit tighter than a stocker setup!)

Apparently we are not using the same material mine resumes its natural shape after about a minute and has no signs of wear after two years. Compression on this material is only 25% deflection. There are many different types’ of neoprene and sponge rubber. I have found the neoprene with EPDM for weather resistance and the SBR provides exceptional abrasion resistance in this seal application.

Thats really the key to how well the seal lasts. seals that are over compressed (over 35% compression) are usually overstressed and take a much faster compression set.

I have the same seal. my seal groove isnt flat and so it varies with the amount of compression. Some areas on the seal look great, others look very bad due to over stress.

Slut, how long have you had this new seal?
does it show any signs of wear? how long would you expect it to last before replaceing?

this stuff will last as long as the rubber door gasket material or your automobile... so 5-10 years maybe

Good luck with the seal. I just finished building up my ski and cut strips of hydro turf (doubled up on it) and not only does it look trick it works awesome! VERY CHEAP and seals just fine.

I used diamond because that's what i had laying around. Seals fine, i used two layers, smaller one to fit inside the rib (like 1/2 inch) and then a little wider one (3/4 inch). Both layers with diamond facing up. You can see a perfect line all the way around where it seals. Seals fine for me, never had a problem. cheap too!

I guess we are stuck with no answers at this point? slutties stuff isn't really available and the mcmaster stuff has mixed reviews. I NEED to replace the weather stripping in my ski. :banghead:
