Superjet - Project RS *Build Complete (for now)*

I love the touch of visual carbon and the colours you went with. Great job, it looks awesome. I hope to see this at a local event sometime.

Thanks @sneds !

As some of you might know, I finished the ski 2 or 3 weeks ago. But here's the full udpate;

The last big piece to the puzzle was the hood. It was already lowered, but falling apart! The previous owner did a poor job.

Since I'm breathing through the pole now, I removed the liner and did some cutting.

Just like @Parsonsjb88 and @plaidward, I'm a typical engineer and I have a tendency of sometimes overthinking things! I came up with an overly complex layup of random fiberglass for the inside of the hood!

Here's the outside of the hood.

Then I spent hours sanding the outside of the hood, laid a few thin layers of S-glass and topped it off with a visual layer of 2x2 twill carbon.

Some masking and primer.

Then some paint and clear.

You guys probably remember my custom ride plate from a few pages back in this build..... Well, I slapped some paint and clear on it as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't match the rest of the ski, since I had different plans back then. I learnt that I didn't like working with Kevlar and decided to stay away from it for the rest of the build. So red on the bottom of the ski for now! Haha!

McMaster Carr... The number 2 jetski supplier (number 1 being @JetManiac of course).

Nose cone painted!

I can't believe I rode this ski for a year without issues. The previous owner was a hack! Here's an example;

After the wiring was all fixed, I got the trim and controls all setup!

Everything under the hood is ready to rock (minus hooking up the batter, installing spark plugs, and throwing fuel in the tank).

Lastly, throw some turf on it, and she's DONE!

I had issues with the paint, I think I did the clear with too much humidity in the air. It yellowed in a few areas. I was rushed to get the ski done for a trip back home. Oh well, lesson learnt. Overall, most of the finish work is sub-par, in my opinion. But instead of fixing it, the plan is to ride it a bunch and make sure I'm happy before making it "perfect". Who knows, I may want to make changes. So the build is done for now!! Time to ride!

I'll post some riding pics and a ride report in a day or two.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the comments.

This summer, before riding this ski, the only other ski I rode was my wife's stock SN 701... With that said, my first impression of my build was simply a big smile! Definitely happy with it. After some minor tuning, I was happy with the power. It's snappy down low, and pulls through its entire RPM range very well.

I love doing 180 nose stabs with it (I don't get a full 180 degrees yet, but whatever, you get the point). I was definitely able to figure out the setup wake pretty quickly though.

At this point, I had very little tray time. But I brought the ski back to my hometown for our big annual family reunion and got a bunch more tray time over there. Didn't have a single issue with the ski the entire time, and I got to ride with my brother and some friends. Great times!

With more tray time, I started getting comfortable with the new setup. The ski is capable of riding nose high when I want it to, but it rides nice and level at any sort of speed. The ski recovers much better than it used to, but keep in mind, it was a -7 ski with a tiny ride plate. It's still -7 now, but the ride plate is much longer and the tray was extended as well. The rocker definitely splashes me, but not nearly as much as I thought it would. I can definitely live with it. If the ski gets repainted at some point, I may do a splash guard, but that's low on the priority list. The foothold setup is much nicer than the old setup. I may adjust them slightly when I returf, but overall I'm happy. I did love how my old 650sx used to slide out! If I get enough weight forward, I can get my RN to slide out too, which is actually pretty fun! Otherwise, it seems to hook up pretty good on tight corners.

On the other hand, I was definitely struggling with the boat wake jumping... Done lots of it in the past, but just couldn't get very comfortable on my ski. I was taking it easy, meanwhile my brother was going pretty huge! But I was still just figuring out my ski.... And before I even had the chance to try anything stupid, I landed awkwardly and dislocated my shoulder. So that was the end of that!

So with that injury, I'm out for a little bit. Oh well, gives me some time to work on other projects. Not sure if I'll get out again this year or not, but I'm looking forward to next season for sure!

Okay, so this may not be the best ride report out there... Limited info! I just typed up what was on my mind. Just keep in mind that I have limited experience on SJ's and AM hulls, so I don't want to mislead anyone into chopping 7 inches off their ski and then making their own custom ride plate. Most of my riding experience came from riding this ski before I started this project. Been on a few other Superjets, spent some time on a few Kawis, and only really spent a little bit of time on my brothers two Rickters. So I'm not sure my experience level is high enough to give a good report. All I know is that my ski isn't as fun as my brothers new XFS with a mild 701 in it..... But mine came at a fraction of the cost and I learnt a bunch of neat composite stuff in the process! So I'm a happy dude!

The real question is, how well will everything hold up? Let's hope my composite work survives. I haven't had a chance to check over the entire ski after my weekend of fun, but I will before riding it again.

You boys better be at Zions next weekend!
Missed it cause of my injury unfortunately. It looked like a blast though! I intend to be there next year, for sure.

Great idea on the tow loops mounted to your pump ears. I have been wondering what I was going to do for something like that so thanks!
Thanks, they came from McMaster Carr (part number 33815T51), and I just had to drill out the hole slightly to fit the pump bolts.

great job, love your ski.. hope you get better soon. great to folllow your buildup
Thanks!! I'm healing up quickly, but not quick enough since I'm just itching to get back out.
