Do surfers and skiers tend to avoid each other? Do you each have your own beaches you go to, or do you both groups play around on the same waves? I was just curious as I have never ridden in surf before, and you never see any surfers in the vids.

there is no co mingling. On a very small wave day we had one guy stop and watch us throwing rolls off little 1 footers and he was impressed. He enjoyed my re-entry to sand much better, even though I wrecked pretty bad.

You can ride In very few locations but they have the entire coast, so when there are surfers in that one spot you can ride you push them out.
So to answer you question, No you do not share the waves. Every once in a while if there are only a couple people on skis you will get a tow in surfer that is willing to get in the middle but they usually give up pretty quick. Not really worth the risk for them.

hahahaha I surf, jetski, kitesurf and windsurf and I can say 100% that there is no to very very little co-mingling. Generally they have a bad attitude as well. When I ride near my house I can see lots of surfers casting spells at me (i.e. frantic arm waving, water slapping etc).
I've met a couple surfers who were interested and impressed with what it takes to ride surf with a jetski.

I was scoping out a surf spot on Vancouver Island this morning called Jordan River and was wondering how they would react to a couple Jetskis. There was plenty of surf to go around but I imagine they would do the universal surfer act and claim it all as their own.

Here in Daytona Beach, no one is allowed in the jet ski zone besides Jet skiers. beach patrol will kick the surfers out for us. makes its easy. we get 600 feet of the coast to ride, they have the rest. so there shouldnt be any complaining.

Good shaped, ridable waves are such a rare commodity that they are one of the most sought after things on the planet. Unfortunately, when it comes to waves, both surfers and skiers are looking for the same thing, so no, there's no cohabitation, it's straight up competition. However since Jet Skis are pretty much illegal in the surf zone almost everywhere there's usually not any problems. The conflict starts when surfers try to come and take over one of the few established riding areas we have.

Next spring, around march I'll be going to a satellite conference at Cal Poly San Luis, and I've always thought it'd be nice to drive out there and bring the skis to try at morro bay in the surf at least once. I always see surfers out there (no idea if skis are not allowed or anything), even when the waves suck, so was curious if you ever take turns on the waves lol--guess not!

no problems on this end...every so often you get an arm waver or a water slapper..but they change their tune when they get caught on outgoing tide and drift out to sea

Water slappers make me laugh out loud every time. Remind me of 4 year olds not getting their way.

I bet the motion of arm waving changes on their way out...... LOL

Respect the surfer and just find another shoulder.

So many of these posts are the problem. Grew up in San Diego, Started surfing at 14 (25 years ago). Jet skis should always respect the surfer and his spot. I have been riding jet skis for almost 10 years now. Jet skis have motors and get to all of the crucial spots on a wave. I love riding jet skis and surfing.

I think the best way to put in words for me is that if I am surfing and some douche bag on a ski tries to take my spot..................I wont splash water at you, But you may be loading your ski and get a left hook that changes your life.

and you would catch some hot lead. welcome to the GUNSHINE state you cali d-bag. we pack heat here in FL and have something called "castle law" that says if you are threatened or attacked you CAN use deadly force.

as has been mentioned, surfers can go anywhere, Jet Skiiers...not so much. so if we have a spot to go, take your surf board somewhere else and get over yourself.
