Thanks MCrider....
Well, I have been working on it a little. Easter weekend was brutal with the kiddo's... I had big plans of working every night, but it just didn't pan out that way.
I think I worked Friday or Sat night til midnight or 1:00am... thank god for iHeart radio.
I bought some 24 grit rolock sanding discs, and scuffed up the face of the aluminum... some props to The Buzzard for his suggestion on that (even though he meant the other side....).
Then I hit all the foam with some 40 grit by hand to prep it for laying up the tray. I finished shaping the foothold areas as best as I could. Its not perfect, but I think once its turfed it'll look good.
I didn't take pics of everything, but I used a old towel to get the basic shape of what I thought the CF would need to be, props to an old build thread by Water Nut. That didn't work perfect, but it worked better than paper. I cut my CF, and tested it out in the spot it should be.
Then I used paper to make a pattern for the tray.
I covered a thin piece of plywood with a trash bag, and used that to wet out my carbon. Its hard to know just how wet it needs to be. I hear all the time to use as little as possible. But i'm always nervous about it being too dry. I went a touch wet but not too much. Hind sight, via a little coaching from Steve at Trendsetterz, I should have mixed up some thickened epoxy for the inverted part of the gunwale. I was having issues getting it to stick via surface tension. I hung out and baby sitted it for a hour until the resin got good and tacky. He gave me some other tips that i'll try on the next layers.
I already had the kevlar cut and ready, so I wetted it out and put it in place.
I know the strings are bad... I struggle with keeping them from walking off. A lot of the stringy hangers will be cut off soon so I can lay the tray. I have discovered a trick to keeping them in place on the next go around. We'll see how it goes.
And uber props to anyone who makes visual carbon parts. This stuff is hard to get to form to contours. I was happy to get it to just lay flat without buckling, and that took some major arranging.
After making my patterns.... I realized I have made a slight mistake...
I don't have enough carbon cloth to finish my tray...
Then I looked at the calendar and remembered that hydroturf had reportedly been slow on getting material....
And I haven't ordered any yet.... (Hell I hadn't decided what I was gonna put on it until Saturday...)
So ordered more this morning from Sollier Composites. And I have a e-mail into hydro turf to check stock on the turf I want to use. Its gonna be close for me to make the LSFR... I suppose if I can't do anything else in the tray I can install all the drive train... I think... hmmm...
Ok, thats it...
Well... actually...
Gorilla bird wants to say hi...
