Swapping hin numbers from hull to hull

Tried to search, no luck...

So what is the deal with people using hin numbers from a different ski to register an aftermarket hull or a replacement hull?

I've heard it's illegal And others have told me they haven't had a problem in 30 years.

There is no reason to delete the thread. Op isn't asking how to break the law. He's asking advice about a ski with a bad Hin. It's a good question.

It's illegal to remove, tamper or swap a hin. People do it, and they get away with it, but that does not make it legal. The people who tell you that it is okay are giving bad advice. You should understand the risks of dealing and illegal or possibly stolen property.

All aftermarket hulls should be titled as home built, should be titled under the brand they were purchased as or be accompanied by a manufactured certificate of origin. It may also be acceptable to have a receipt of sale from a manufacture but that I don't know for sure on. Home built vessels need receipts of the materials and an inspection. A hin is assigned by the tax collector. Any ski that has a hin removed mush be done with the permission of the uscg after filing appropriate paperwork. Even a stock hull with matching hin is illegal if that hin has been removed or replaced without uscg paperwork.

You are welcome to make whatever choices you want. Just dont discuss your actions here if you decide to do something you are not suppose to. The site can not condone illegal actions.

We're pretty simple here in NC. Just fill out a form that says its homemade and mail it in. Sometimes they'll ask you for a picture of the back right of the ski to see if you just modified a stock hull, which would mean you don't get a new hin as it already had one.

I wouldn't be scared to buy an aftermarket with no hin or a fake one even if it was from Canada and then register as homemade. I wouldn't used the swapped one at all, it is so easy to do it right.

In CA its illegal to swap or tamper vins. But I know first hand it is very simple to get it built as a Special Contruction or same as home built

it was mentioned above. ANY tampering with a hin is illegal. with that being said can you get away with it, of course it done properly. However it is still illegal but if the exact same hull 1996 superjet to a 1996 superjet it will be hard for an officer to notice. Its not like you are putting a title of a 4 stroke sitdown onto an old js550. Be smart about it if you do it....but still illegal lol

I'll back Matt up. I filled out NC's form and called to make sure all the info was there they needed. No pics just a statement from me of the situation of the hull and I had it notarized. Took like 12 seconds. Mailed it in with my check and in 10 days I got an email for a temporary registration. You live in Raleigh so just drive to NCWRC. Probably walk out with a sticker. They just want the money.

Swapping HIN's are like drugs......don't do it.

The question I'd ask is... Is the few hundred dollars you might save from buying a "good deal" worth the possibility of jail time, career jeopardy? No way for me.

So making your ski legit took less time than reading this thread?

It's pretty easy in the "backwards" republic of CA, so it's got to be easy to register your ski in some other states too.

Edit: good advice from @Sasquachcrap

I would think if you had a stock hull and cut it up and glassed it all back together. You could get by with calling it home built. If you didn't have transferable paperwork.

Yea I would agree....pretty sure they only care about the check you send with whatever paperwork you send them. Honestly....my registered 2015 WDK RIP could be a bicycle with a big block chevy being floated with pool noodles and they still would give you a registration for it.

Or like the guy this year on lake norman that put a small outboard motor on his floating trampoline and legitimately registered it as a boat so Duke Energy couldnt make him take it out of that lake....now that is freakin' gangster!
