Sx-r 260

Building the sx-r that Kawasaki should have.

Picked up this donor ski off market place that had a broken piston. 2008 Kawsaki 250x , supercharged 250hp 1500cc.

Was able to find a 2018 sxr hull with some minor damage to the bottom about 6hrs south east of me . Met the seller at a lake and tested out my new revolver build. 58degree air 48 degree water temp made for a quick water test . But was good to get a first shake down ride in on a new build.

Got then engine pulled out of the donor.

Got a set of ultra 260 forged wossner pistons and a new oem cylinder. 250 and 260 have the same engine , 260 just received updated pistons with more compression to make the 10 hp and fix the 250 broken piston problems.

Found a used blowsion pole and steering setup, then a local friend posted his ultimate hood setup for sale . Traded the blowsion pole and some cash for the hood setup. Rode his stock 1500 with this hood and it was a blast on a buoy course.

Got the engine test fit so I could see where I’m going to mount an Intercooler as the oem is way to big. I’m going to have to build own exhaust outlet.

Test fit the supercharger on the engine , supercharger just barely fits fit he side of the hull.

Got exhaust from manifold to hull outlet built . Planning to put my intercooler where the oem waterbox was . Hopefully not too loud being straight piped.

Made an adapter to use the ultra fuel pump assembly into the sxr tank . Eventually I will make a larger fuel tank . Ultra oem tank was 22 gallons , sxr only 6.1. Fuel consumption claimed to be 22 gal/hr at wfo. Was able to modify the fuel sender so I will have a fuel gauge with the cluster.

Interesting build,, you may want to check weight and balance. The SC is heavy and it may lean way too much in a ski. Even the heavy ultra hull will list to the SC side when floating. May need to add weight to balance it out. Good luck on build.

I’ll for sure will be mounting the battery and such on the other side . I know I’ve ridden some skis that set low on one side and didn’t notice once moving.

Progress has been slow , pulled the cylinder off and found a spun rod bearing . Found a crank / cases on eBay with 37hrs on them . Decided I wanted it to be 100% fresh since I was this far . Been waiting 2 months on backordered rod bearings and oil pump . Shows they have shipped so goal is have it running by Labor Day. Definitely would of been money ahead to buy a better running donor or a newer 300/310.

Dump that engine if you can. They were not great to begin with. There were lots of changes for the 300/310 engine to improve reliability. The 300 supercharger is much larger and heavier though so this would be a big challenge for a standup hull build.

Also do not put that back together without disassembling the oil cooler. Especially if it had ANY salt water use! The small channels in the oil / water heat exchanger get corroded up and cause problems inside. Further the Kawi castings are not great. Look close at all pieces (even new ones) before re-assembly.

The 300 charger actually sits tighter to the engine and I have one that I’m thinking of using . Fresh water ski but it’s getting fully rebuilt. I’m hoping with the forged piston setup , new 250 or 300 charger, new oil pump and engine freshened up it should last awhile . I am already searching copart for a 300 . I heard the 310s had piston issues as well.

Back in 04-05 ish, Riva had a vortec supercharger kit for the 15F. It was much smaller than the newer kawasaki SCs.

Might be worth a search as it would likely be easier to install due to size. I do remember those being problematic for the race skis blowing belts though. But they were fast for the time.

Finally got time to get engine built over the 4th of July .
IMG_6182.jpeg
Installed Amazon boat fuel tank level sender in oem tank and then gauge in factory key spot . Mounted the key on the right side.

All stuffed in there . Very little room to work with 4” air inlet piping , 2.5” exhaust , and two 2.5” intercooler pipes .

Got the engine harness and wiring installed , hood on and test rode it Sunday . Sounds incredible. List of small things left to do .

Steeper impeller 18/28 or so
Mount ecu
Mount gauge cluster to hood/ steering
Wire in fuel sender
Add more cooling to the exhaust
Replace some charge pipe clamps to t-Bolts
Possibly add a 3rd 1/2” cooling line
