Other SXR Vs SJ: Lake riding

Ya ya, I know there's tons of these threads


I recently purchased a SJ but also rode a SXR for the first time.

The SJ does not corner like a 750 or SXR... mines not 100% dialed in but im not impressed with the handling. I have a completely stock ski and I have read it takes some getting used to.


My main question is, for you guys just recreation riding at the lake what do you prefer? I realize SJ is favored due to its light weight and SXR is known for its cornering but in the long run whats "funner" day in and day out (i.e. the long haul)?



Either way Im happier than sitting on the beach with any ski, but its just something I have been wondering since I rode that SXR.


Sorry for another one of these questions but I just am curious to hear from owners who own both/have experience.

I switch back and forth between heavily modded SJ, stockish SJ, bonestock SXR, and 550/650 quite a bit. In the end, while fun to ride, the SXR is the least playful.

What he said^. On choppy days I for sure liked my SXR better, but putting gas in it twice as often just wasn't worth it. It wasn't as good for any aerial maneuvers either.

Another thing I noticed is as a bigger guy 6'4"ish and 210lbs I feel like I am in control of the ski, but on the SXR the ski was more in control of me....

Does that make any sense? Was that just me or is that normal? Idk if that was good or not, or if it was necessarily "better"

My buddy has a limited SXR that I get to ride once in a while, I get a kick out of how fast and stable it is for racing around for a few laps, it is an amazing ride for that. In the long run I enjoy close manuevers and jumping wake more than chasing around though, and the Superjet is better for that.

Yes that makes sense, It takes a lot more body english to throw the SXR around. The plus side is you can be a total goon and not fall.

SXR feels like a big, stable go-fast boat to me
for better cornering you can get a 08 and newer SJ

They add width and buoyancy to the front of the hull. In handling terms, it makes SX-R like carving possible and somewhat prevents pearling in surf. They can make the hull handle a bit squirrelly at medium speeds, but that's ready to gey used to.

I put a set of tubbies on my SN and am still not sure I like it
the surf guys love them
on flat water, not so much IMHO
a friend who rode my ski said it rides like a butterfly on roids at high speeds
takes some getting used to

I think once you do get used to it (it didn't take me very long), you hardly even notice it.
I could go WOT in the low to mid 50's no problem.

I loved mine on flatwater for the added carving.

How do they effect hockey slide type maneuvers? Does it make it float lighter when you are sliding out?

I can do slideouts only on tubbie'd hulls.

You buy a SuperJet because you want a ski that can fly through the air off a wave.

If you're on a lake, a SuperJet is just another slow ski that handles poorly - it's a 550.

On a lake (or surf if you're racing) the SX-R is harder, better, faster, & stronger.

haha, all we do is lake riding. I think you gotta add some power to your superjet and learn to make a setup wake.

What it does show, though, is that everyone has different tastes. Try one of each and see what you like best.

Hummm, I actually got some tubbies locally for $40 awhile back.... I wasn't going to use them but maybe it something I should consider to corner a little better? I heard they "chine" in lake conditions. What exactly does that mean? Would I benefit more as a heavy rider?


I think I will ride it as is for awhile and get everything adjusted properly.....
