This is what I meant Don.Sanoman, I had a similar clearance issue with pf pipe water fitting hitting my hood lip. I used a pipe tap to tap the bung deeper so the fitting would screw in deeper. Then I ground the area above the threads on the water fitting ( that square area ), on a bench grinder, ground it to a round shape and tapped those threads higher up the fitting so it could screw in deeper as well.
Might help some, you could do the water fitting for sure, but the pump bung might not work as the tap may hit the stator first
Also I wonder if these other aluminum fittings That I just got are shorter, I'll have a look. The ones I ground were like yours
