No, I do not think that key is the only thing that is keeping the flywheel in place. Just looking at it from a different angle. Yes, I have heard of people even using loctite on the taper to help seal the flywheel on. But without the key on it, the fly wheel will be more prone to keep timing than without.

Think this is more of a "they go hand in hand"

I dont think a drill press spins 6500 rpm's do they??

The key has NOTHING to do with it. Without the key there would be no reliable reference for ignition timing. RPM has very little to do with it either(unless you can spin the motor fast enough to distort the shape of the female taper-not gonna happen). It all comes down to torque. Many machine tools put out FAR greater amounts of torque than jetskis do. If what you're suggestion was correct, offset keys would fail quickly. There is VERY little material on those to prevent slippage. It simply allows you to place the FW on with a measured amount of timing increase. If you look at some of the dyno numbers thrown around for jetskis you might see torque numbers up to maybe 200ft lbs. That's nothing in machine tools. The only exception might be the instant slowing of the motor when re-entering the water with a revving motor. It's still only the taper doing the work.:burnout:

Crammit is right. The key is for timing alignment. When the pump comes unhooked then hooked ( watercraft do this alot) the shock of the sudden appearence of water tries to stop the impeller, it almost does, this shock is transmitted all the way up the driveline through the crankshaft to the flywheel. The inertia stored in the flywheel keeps the drive(crank included) spinning. This almost tears the crank apart (remember its pressed together). The key is the last resort if the force is to great, well thats part of the idea. Usually if the key is broke you have other issues.

I thought I would post some pic's of a new motor of mine. It has been in the works for over a year and it arrived in Nov 07. I will post a build on this ski in a few days to explain more. SO SO SEXY. I want to sleep in the garage about every night.

Those are some nice looking carbs Lake. :fing02:

The timing alignment part is a no brainer........

like I said, they go hand in hand, no, it does not "hold the flywheel in place". But install the flywheel without it, and you can do this if the motor is on a bench and you correctly align the flywheel without it and torque it down correctly. You will have a better chance of the flywheel spinning on the shaft and jumping time.....

No you won't.......

I decided to run mine w/o the flywheel, flywheel key, and the flywheel bolt!!!
It is really freegin snappy now!!!

ps-Cummins 5.9 turbo diesal engine-no keys on cam and crank gears and only a taper and a bolt. 365hp/690 ft lb torque(they r a beitch to time)

we should add to the end of this that loctite on the taper should not be used as all it is doing is placing a weak layer or film between the two tapers that are meant to be mated properly it will definatly give you problems

Push Start? thats for sissys dude! I use a pull rope wrapped around the coupler!-backfires rule! I love getting all wadded up between my ignition box and the back of my cylinders!

It's ony for sissies when you start from the boat ramp. Deepwater push starts separate the men from the boys.:icon16:

OK-u win that 1. What are the dino #'s on your no flywheel motor?

I don't know my numbers, but they did make John Scorn smile!!! Can your motor do that???

so, has anyone done any 66e case porting?

I know Jeff says there is some to be done with a BB application, and I figure I might as well port it now while its all aprt...then changing to a BB setup later will be as simple as changing top ends and carbs..

river ratt ported his. I think he posted pics too. pretty sure he said he ported it like a 62t.

I ported mine. I was told (by a well know builder) not to do to much. The only place that needs work is where the cages meet the boost port entrances. Doesn't really need more than that.
