The Official GoPro/Video Mount Thread

Location

It seems that there are a ton of questions, ideas, ways to mount cameras and such while riding. Most are posted sporadically in different threads. I figured we would start one just for this purpose where people can share different mounts, tethers, flotation, etc.

I use a GoPro wide. I have the original mounts in which I use a key chain floaty and tether. I have had it break from my old fish line tether so I am re-designing a new one. Luckily the key chain floaty works and it is easy to see in the water. There is one zip tie under the latch attached to the floaty and one around the camera to keep the floaty from flapping around. This second zip tie also works as a backup to keep the case shut if the latch ever fails. Recently GoPro also came out with the wrist case for the wide angle lens. I have just started using this and have found the O-Side crew boys mounting to the helmet the best. I still need to make a flat mount to help the camera sit flush to the face shield.

drew runs his atop his helmet. I run mine mounted to the front as well, but I use sticky tape with one of the mounts the camera came with... along with a lanyard. I'll see if I can find a close up pic...

Note, the cam on the side of my helmet was an oregon scientific... which i lost the day this pic was shot.

Just got this done and thought it turned out pretty slick. I plan on primarily using the suction cup mount at first to figure out where to put the permanent ones. Likewise, I wanted a bullet proof tether for when she lets go. Note that this DOES NOT connect to or rely on the typical mount location which I can easily imagine ripping right off. Hopefully if that happens I don't also end up with a hole in the case or else it might be curtains anyways.

This consists of a 24" coiled, coated, galvanized steel rope lanyard with looped ends (mcmaster pn 90312A139, $5.16) and some 1/2" self gripping hook-loop strap material (pn 94905K115, $4.79). I wrapped black gorrila tape around the collars at each end of the lanyard to protect paint or anything else that could get chipped up as it flaps around. The velcro strap needed a couple of reliefs cut in it for the mode button. And it might not have been absolutely needed, but I cut a small 1/2" slot in the back of the case to further ensure the strap couldn't slip off the side.

This isn't water tested yet, but it is strong as hell vs a pull test in any direction. Note the thumb screw holds the end of the velcro down. I think I am going to get a 36" one with my next order as the 24" wasn't quite as long as I was expecting. That way I can do 2', 3' or 5' as needed. I plan on using this on more than just the ski.

Update: I ran this tether setup all season and it never once let me down. My camera got ripped off in hard bails a number of times and this tether saved the day every time. It is a bit of a pain to use but it seems to be bulletproof. Surprisingly, the suction cup mount holds really well as long as you have it stuck somewhere semi-flat and dry off the area first.

Here is my mount. It was done with the standard mounting adapters that comes with the most basic package. The visor has the standard 2 screws and was reinforced with an additional 3 screws for added strength. The security loop was drilled through the helmet itself and loops around the adjustment screw (not shown installed) just in case the adhesive fails.

You might think the camera blocks your vision but it really doesn't. If you look for it, you can see the bottom edge but when riding, you're looking down enough that you almost never see it.

Here I have an aluminum mount replacing the nose piece of the helmet. Then the 3M adhesive pad sticks to the polished aluminum. My TNT Filmz Bomb squad and I all have kustom mounts ive made, and each are ingraved with the riderz name and TNT Filmz. i think 13 of us now, and we have 6 helmet cams rotated through the group depending on who is riding, helmet cam action is a great way to spice things up, but don't rely on making a good movie with only it, IMO. but keep er' pinned!! my mount also has a small cable I clip under my go pro case thingy and there is my safety device lol.

Here's the mount I made for SuperJETT to pass along with his camera. The handlebar clamp is used to hold the camera.

Here’s the best tips ever concerning a Go Pro. Unless you’re planning on filming yourself, the wide angle lens Go Pros SUCK. Better to get a 5 mega pixal regular lens wrist mount. Helmet mounting is easy and they take the best shots. Don’t bother with an HD, the vid quality gets degraded to something similar to a 5mp when you upload your footage on YouTube. The BEST OVERALL set up for cheap home movie entertainment would be to have BOTH a 5mp WIDE lens for shots of your self and a 5mp regular lens for everything else. Edit and mix up the footage, using MOSTLY the stuff filmed with the REGULAR LENS. Nothing brings on a headache quicker than 5 minutes of footage of the nose of your ski because everything else is out of focus.
