The Ressurection

So far I had got the nose on and reinforced the inside of the ski pretty good. Next I wanted to strengthen up the bottom a little more so I decided to lay a full sheet of carbon over most of the bottom, well at least cover all the cracks up. I had already ground off all the old glass work to bar carbon on the bottom earlier so it was pretty straight forward. The only biotch part was to get the 19 oz. carbon to contour to the curves of the bottom of the hull. What I did was use some wax paper that I layed over the carbon then I wrapped the whole hull with industrial strength plastic wrap. It worked pretty good, too bad I don't have any pics of what it looked like when I was doing it. This is what it looked like when I was done though.

The wax paper pealed off for the most part but I'll sand the rest off before I either clear coat it or gel coat it. Any body have any suggestions on what I should do to the bottom of the hull??????

You can also see how I fabbed up the bottom of the hull with some duct tape and carbon fiber.

damn erock. didn't know you had it in you. :ugh:

looking like a real ski now.

see you and that badass piece of carbon fiber next week.

Man I don't know how to take that, maybe I won't share my bed with you in Daytona like last year. After all I think a girl is a little more enticing anyways, sorry I still love ya. You should just bring your square over and drop the motor in it at my house, we can have a lil jetski party.

WOW, I think that project would have scared me off! Props to you bro. Are you going to replace the bond line?????

I thought about it for a while and decided just to keep it in the front. The outside will look just like the inside. I'm hoping it will look halfway decent, time will tell I guess. I'll have some pics of it up in a couple days.

Well it's been a while since I've posted so I guess I should get this thread up to date. So a few weeks ago I was home and what else would I do but work on the hull. I ended up defoaming it which wasn't too bad but it was definitely a little wet. Got all the foam out and then after a little debating with myself I decided to lay a little carbon in the back, just to be a little precautious.

Got all the foam out mostly using a wire cup on a drill. This is by far the fastest way in my opinion although I have wanted to see what gasoline does to this foam. On the left side of the ski I only layed one piece of carbon on the whole side but on the right side first I put a 5" strip down then a piece over the whole thing.

very cool.

Eric, do you know if Sergio sells those quick drain tunnels like you have in your ski?

Yes he does, I remember someone who did a xft top deck on a squarenose put two of them in his ski. It was a huge build a while back and then I think he sold the hull almost right after he was done with it. I would get ahold of Dan Stein if you're looking to get them. In my opinion they are the most efficiently designed scupper tubes out there.

cool... thanks bro...

btw, the ski is looking good... you gonna have it ready for daytona?

No problem.

That's the plan atleast, this time of year is tough to get work done because my family owns a x-mas tree farm and all I do is work on the farm until christmas is over. I guess I'll have to stay out of the bars at night and just put in some hours on the hull.

So the next step I wanted to tackle was to get the sides to look somewhat respectable. What I had planned was to keep the rails in the front as much as I could and then just blend the top and bottom deck with a lit bit of foam. Over the top of the foam I put a layer of 19 oz. carbon and a layer of 5.4 oz. carbon. I ended up getting the right side of the hull done and the left side is ready to lay up.

before you started adding layers, how thick was XFT's layup in areas like the tray, nose, etc?

The tray area where you stand is two layers thick, but the sides are more. The nose is probably about 5 layers thick but he uses that honeycomb stuff up front and in other areas too. All the cloth seems to be a lighter material like 5.4 oz. or somewhere around there. If you want any specific pics or details just let me know and I'll try to help ya out.

WOW! That ski was thrashed!!! nice work whipping it back into shape.

Thanks man, it really is daunting and I'm slowly losing interest in it. So much work and time already invested and it still looks horrible, I just need to keep on pushing and get this thing done.
