650/X-2 thoughts on 650sx?

So I think I got a decent deal on a 650. Might be picking up next weekend. I have a js550 right now. I am a beginner, just wondering thoughts on the 650sx. Id like to take it in the surf when my skill is up and I know the ski is 100%. I never see many videos on youtube with the 650s in the surf. So just wondering how they compare to other skis especially compared to a 550. thanks

The 650 platform is supposedly less nimble and agile, but better handling at faster speeds than the 550 platform. Then you obviously have 100cc more power. I don't ride surf so can't say anything about how it would perform there.

IMO I like the 650 it's reliable and with some upgrades can be a fun ski. I know people are all gonna say buy a superjet but IMO f*** the super jet if you want to pay 2000 dollars more than something's worth than go for it. Now don't get me wrong the new superjets are nice but I think the 650sx looks better than the sn sj it all comes down to the build all they are motors with water pumps that float the sj is for people that just want to bolt on stuff and go the 650 you can do the same just takes more research you have to remember the 650 production stopped in 94 alot of places can still get aftermarket parts there just not in stock there made to order. You can make that 650 do whatever you want you just have to be creative because bolt on stuff is not as popular for the 650 like the sj

A well built 650 will blow a superjet away. but the amount of money it will take is up there.
A 650sx with a 750 motor and a good pipe and prop is a super fun ski.

Had alot of fun on the wifes 650sx, stock except for JD ride plate+intake grate and paint. Fun boat that anyone could get on and ride. We sold it cause we were out of romm on the trailer. I never tried but it might be fun in the ocean. Need a limiting rope and take the gas door off or the ocean will eat it Ha Ha.

A limiting rope is for the handle pole right? Yeah theres a few superjets for sale around here put im looking to spend almost a grand more than a 650sx. Since im a beginner I can always upgrade later on.

I learned on a 650sx then bought a superjet...but I also bought a 650sx for my girl, I really had fun on it and it is a really good beginner ski, basically my whole family learned to ride on it. It was an all stock 87 so it had the tiny 28mm carb on which sucked but it was something different from my SJ. They are stable but slow for the most part, I sold it and built a 750sxi which I havent tried out yet but I do wish I still had the 87 650 tucked away in my garage...

First ski I rode was a buddies stock 650sx, then my dad bought one mainly for me to play with since I showed interest, then I bought my own which I'm still upgrading. I never plan to sell this 650, upgrade to an AM ski once I get out of school, but always keep my 650sx. It's a fun cheap ski, with quite a few upgrades so you learn everything about a ski before moving onto a really fancy one. Just got my nitrous oxide installed on mine today :)

looking into a 650 with a 750 engine. Now im sure any flipping will be a while away, but do people freestyle 650's? still yet to find a good video of anyone surf riding a 650, modded or not. except x2's, I see alot of those. thanks for the replys!

Freestyle or freeride? As I understand it, freestyle is flat water tricks versus freeride being the surf equivalent. And as joker said, my 2012 goal is to flat water flip a 650 with a 650 motor, you can definitely do a lot on a 650, it's just more skill versus power oriented compared to other hulls it seems. I wouldn't throw anything out of the ball park, especially with a modded 650 in the surf!

...chaos? Its Fair!
I have seen a video of a 550 being flipped and rolled in the surf. You will probably be able to do it on a 650 or 750 if that's what your going for.

davy where do you ride. i ride in barnegat bay as well (sorta, im north of the seaside bridge), in lavallette. i have 650 that im working on putting a 750 in. Ill finish the work when im done with the semester. you're welcome to come try the 750 after i get it dialed in. I've only rode a stock 650 (that had some engine problems so it was lacking power, even for a 650) and a stock js300. so i don't really have much experience but i can say i see what people mean about the 650 being a bit of a boat to ride around on. in the bay though it's nice. on choppy days the js style hulls just can't handle continuous 2 foot chop.

you said you're looking into a 650 with a 750 engine? are you doing the swap yourself?

A 650sx is equivalent to a shortened Superjet with regard to the center of gravity and planing area. It will still take a lot of power or a wave to backflip a full length hull. If your nitrous system works well, a larger pump/inlet will be needed for good thrust at low speeds.

Hadn't thought about a larger pump/inlet^, good observation though and I will definitely keep it in mind as I test my setup. My hull is also -5" short off the back end.

In my opinion the 650 is a dog nomatter what you do to it. They are stable at speed but that's about all they've got going for them. I personally would take a 550 over a 650 any day of the week.
