to much power for my skills?

im wanting to build a better motor.every time i read about some one asking about big engines i always here people saying thats too much power for your skill. Is this just people that cant afford big motors hating on others or is there really too much power and at what point is it.most of the guys that reply seemed to have limted or mild ported engines. i mean you never see a guy in a 302 mustang saying i should have got a v6 its to much for my skills.just wondering what others thought are.

you make a good point......... As far as flatwater freestyle goes. Too much power can actually hurt you some, not saying you can not adapt, but when I have to borrow another competitors boat, I try to find one that has closer power to what I run..... If you go into a roll and you nail the gas and the boat rips away from your feet and you you loose your grip then what good is that power........... Typically as you get better, you start upping your power that your motor creates to help your level progress to bigger tricks.

I am talking about the different to a well set up freestyle ported motor 81-84mm with porting by TLR, Team Scream, LPW, Jetworks, Riva vs an 85mm 8 mil stroker flattop Lamey or OEM Cylinder setup.......

We are talking a night and day difference in power out put.

I would say a little of both.....paul lehr recommended that I not do a stroker yet even though he could have made a profit by telling me to do it. and it is true that you should learn some skills before trying to tame a wild beast. but at the same time I am sure some people might have a little hp envy. hp does cost lots of green....something that not everybody has....including myself.

i dont think a 302 vs. 6 cyl mustang is a good comparison....more like a mustang gt compared to a nascar.....in my minds eye anyway

I'd totally build the most bada** motor I can afford, just adapt to the power...I'm in college so I don't have that many discretionary funds. I pretty much went from a 650 6m6 to a 61x with a pipe and was semi-happy but could definitely use more torque, I weigh 195 lbs so its still a bit sluggish.

If you have the money and the desire to build big horsepower, by all means go for it.... if thats what makes you happy.

Thats my philosophy anyways. I have more motor than skill and I like it that way.

When you get to the point that you have overcome the power your motor gives you with your skills (you are hitting every trick perfectly) that is when you are at that point (or close to it) where it would be ideal to step up........

When I wa sracing went from limited to superstock
limited was podium finishes
superstock got smoked mo power less podium finishes mo cash mo repairs

In flat water i love the power my stroker makes in the surf id rather have a limited set up or just ported . . just my 2 cents.

I rode my sons boat in surf last time I went because mine was tore down, I liked it, but I was wore out quicker due to the lack of power I was trying to make the boat do things it couldn't or that I couldn't do without the power. There are guys that can barrell roll a stock Superjet, but they are not the majority, I need power due to my lack of skilz.

Depends on what you like. I am a big fan of power. Too me it just makes things easier and riding more enjoyable. a buddy of mine has a Big Bore LPW motor and although it is nice, it just does not have that punch that my standard strke lamey PV has. People say that you can't go down in power and that is so true. Just set the boat up a hair higher than your riding level and that will keep you happy.

My opinion - from someone who just stepped up from a stock 650 SJ to a ported 760 bigbore setup:

I had tons of fun on the 650. I built the 760 because I could and didn't want to buy a new SXR. The 760 is ported, piped, has higher compression, lightened flywheel, etc... Wicked cool power. A bit squirrely and definitely a handful in the corners. Makes my ski feel tons lighter too.

Does it make me a better skier? No. In fact, I have to relearn how to balance myself. Does it make me smile? Hell yes.

Would I advise everyone to go this route? No. Not after riding a piped (Limited B-pipe) 650 with a Solas I prop. I would have been quite happy with that setup for a while more.

I would therefore suggest you upgrade in logical steps: Pipe, impeller, porting, headwork, displacement, etc...

Just my opinion.:sneaky:

I found in the surf that it would be nice to have more brapp, but I am not using all the power it makes now. Whats holding me back is the lack of just nutting up and pinning the throttle.

i guess it was my lack of skill.in daytona i couldnt hardly hang on to my ski.

Depends on what you're doing. I have an insanely overpowered FX1 made By Tricky1. It's nice to pass couches on glass, and gets bigger air than anything I've seen off 2ft stuff (waves or wakes). But... clean predictable power is nicer when encountering 4ftish stuff (depending on many things). IMO. I don't do tricks, but this machine has been the 1st I've ever had which I want LESS power sometimes.

If I were to pinn the throttle on many waves I'd end up landing upside down or worse.... when you're airtime gets past a few seconds, it's much more difficult to keep the angle you want to land at correct. Predictable power helps an old man like me there :)

I agree 100%. If the waves are smooth and glassy, I don't think you can have too much power. When it's blowing and chopped up a good limited or light superstock is way easier to handle. My stroker beats me up in the surf. 'course I'm a bit of an out of shape wuss that only rides surf once or twice a year....:frown:

I might be changing my story after I get my ski dialed in but I say get that huge ass motor and learn how to ride it. I kinda done it that way. I went from a pipe and head on my old ski to a 850cc ADA motor in this ski. I can't ride it worth crap right now. It was so smooth and everything just flowed. This is like a noob learning how to drive a clutch I am on and off of the throtle falling over in turns all sorts of noob stuff... BUT in a few weeks I will get the hang of all this power and it will be back to normal I will just be praticing different tricks.

So get that motor you dream about and learn how to ride it. JMHO
