I don't have a sports car but I have a 2005 jetta with the i5 2.5 liter. Do you guys think I could use a hitch hauler setup and drive a ski around?

If shelby can do it with a motorcycle n miata, you'll be fine. With that said, go buy a 550 and see ya at the dells

I'm not concerned about the hitch and weight and stuff. I'm concerned about my transmission. Both the math and motor cycle are rear wheel drive and have more robust transmissions. The jetta has a FWD transmission and they use smaller gears and clutches which make them more prone to go out. I'm thinking about the car and not the ski. Cause the car is worth more lol.

Would the rear suspension bottom out with a ski sitting so far from the rear axle? Is there a reason you cant trailer, like apt. Housing rules?

trade for a jetta wagon maybe?

Fwd vs rwd trans should not make a difference, if you are worried about it, add an additional external transmission fluid cooler and temp sensor. For piece of mind.

I have a loan on the car and don't feel like going through the Hassel with the bank. And ya I live in a apartment so I don't have a place for a trailer.

Found this article, talks about most vehicles should be able to tow their own weight.

http://www.curbsideclassic.com/auto-biography/the-great-american-anti-towing-conspiracy/

Coming from Africa where seeing a hitch on a sedan is common, I have always been amazed at the general lack of hitches on sedans that you see here in the US. Even on a recent trip to the UK, a small car towing a trailer is very common, but I get some very weird stairs when I roll up to the dump with my 4x8 trailer behind my Saturn Ion loaded up with debris. Ive been towing skis and junk with my Saturn for over 60,000 miles to date, getting 25mpg.

And as far as the motorcycle towing a stand up, thats an awesome idea! Saw this a few year ago, again, where I grew up, motorcycles with trailer for delivering good was common...

Hey man, this is 'murica. If you tow anything bigger than a red rider wagon with anything smaller than a 3500 dually diesel, you are a communist... At least that's what boating websites tell me...

The hitches are rated at 2000 lb trailer weight.

Hey I didn't see anyone reply to your "2000 lb weight".

You said the weight you can TOW-2000 pounds. The hitch hauler (or hitch carrier) is TONGUE WEIGHT. How much your tongue can handle pushing down on it. So, you just have to look up your hitch (class 1 blah blah something) and I already know it wont be able to handle a jet skis weight.

But you can deff tow via a jet ski trailer :)

I had someone tell me they couldn't tow a trailer with a sports car. If you can put a 300lb passenger in it, you can pull a stand up.

You can do anything, but you probably shouldn't do that.

Tongue weight and towing weight are different.
You will destroy your suspension (high tongue weight killed the springs on my s10 blazer).
You will probably not be able to drive over everything without bottoming out (my silverado bottoms out in my driveway)
putting high tongue weight on anything uni-body is probably a bad idea regardless of the rating (The 5.3l V8 silverado is rated 10k lbs but the 5.7l tundra is rated 8k lbs. The difference is in the frame design, not the power).

What vumad said.

The jetta has no frame, its a uni-body construction. Trade for a wagon or rent a garage from the apt and park a trailer. Gotta pay to play.

I plan to tow with my S4. I think the V8 will handle it. And AWD won't leave me stuck on a boat ramp lol. I guess it all depends on what you call a sports car.

Hey I have a 2010 S5 cab with hitch and I put a Kuat on it for my Epic 29er. I am trying to find a wiring harness kit so I can pull my ski. etrailer sold me one that did not work. Please let me know what you use for wiring up the lights on your S4. Love that car BTW send pics!
