Other Trailer or hitch carrier... which do you prefer?

I decide my method of transport based on where I put in and what the wTer levels are like. Unknown ramp or Low water at the club, trailer. Normal water level at the club, hitch hauler. Steep ramp, truck bed. The one thing that I had to do was reverse the bunks on my hitch hauler because of the proximity of the dock to the ramp at my usual spot. I kinda had to flirt with the edge of the ramp to leave enough room to comfortably load and unload my ski. Once I switched, smooth sailing.

Use a custom trailer from a harbor freight kit now, though we have two skis. Never had a problem with the trailer and installed a giant container box on the front to store everything in.

This fall when I move off to college, I'm gonna be using a hitch hauler though so I can bring my ski with me and not worry about space constraints.

$59.00 at Trailer supply warehouse or Harbor freight. Get a cargo carrier and it can be used for other things also.

Gonna modify a harbor freight cargo carrier also.

trailer, makes life easy storage for gascans ( espically if you drive a SUV ) unloading easy back the trailer in pop the hood and go inside. i personally would never use a hitch carrier i'd cry if a strap breaks and i see my $10k ski just slide off and tumble

That's why you have redundant straps :beerchug:

Once you use a hitch hauler you will change your mind. The same straps can break on a trailer so that's not a real point. You can back right in the water, load easy with just 1 person. No extra toll charge.
Trust me once you use one you see how great they are.

The only pics i can find of my hauler are in this thread http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/7305-check-out-my-new-single-double!&highlight= maybe loneoctane or someone else that has one of mine will post more pics.

I used to have a for sale ad on here but i cant find it anymore. i guess they get deleted eventually. i have been getting a lot of intrest lately so i am going to make another run of them.

I have been building and using these for 8 years and have refined my design to be strong light and shipped at a reasonable cost. It will break down and fit into an 18x42 box (about $35 to ship). Also has a class 1 receiver for towing a small trailer or using additional hitch mounted items like bike rack ect.

The spine is heavy wall steel and will take abuse but its up to the end user to stay within their vehicles limits. Common sense must be used. That said, i frequently haul a 24ft pontoon boat behind mine.

TRAILERS ARE FOR COUCHES!!

Single Ski - Hitch hauler

Two+ Skis - Trailer

I also have bunks in the back of the truck to haul a Ski while towing the Boat.

What do you do when you have 4skis

One of the nice things about using that cargo carrier is that it is a tray not two bunners or bunks.

My conversion consists of drilling two holes on the rear corners and one hole on the front.

I run a wratchet strap through a couple of eyes on the bottom and attach to my hitch on both sides crank it down.P4230149.JPG

I'm also gonna weld on a harness like for the trailer, that will just grab the nose and drop a bolt through the bow eye so I can lock the ski up easily, and then the straps will just be redundant.

Haulers are when you need to transport 1 ski or 3 (2 in the bed 1 on the hauler).
I have trailers when you are going with a group. But when you are just going to the lake to meet guys or going to buy a hull why drag a big 4 or 6 place trailer.

Hitch hauler for me, I put ask my gear inside the shell of the truck sky on the back. I like not having to store a trailer and having the ski on the shocks of the truck gives it a smoother ride. Ours rest to launch on a hauler since you put it on sideways instead if trying to push it up a truck bed.

I have seen the pics of the rad dudes haulers and they do look really nice and would probably last forever good stuff.

i just got a used hitch hauler for free and welded an extra hitch i had laying around on the bottom so i can have hitch hauler and a trailer...its badass. but i dont see 2" with 3/16 inch wall thickness bending with under 1000lbs on it. ill post pics tomorrow

photo.jpgI can build you guys one of these out of aluminum that weighs 2/3 less than that steel and will never rust. That picture is steel and was per customer request, and I'll never build it out of steel again. Way to heavy, hard to load in hitch alone it is complete over kill. I have been in the metal fab business for 15 years and this hauler out of aluminum is untouchable. HMU $350 plus shipping built to order for your vehicle. Rear spare tire? No problem. Thanks Curtis

Alum bends and breaks it can't take the repeated bouncing of going down the road with a load. To me I would rather have it be over kill and heavy made of steal but know that my 25k ski isn't going to fall off the back of the truck.

So for all the saltwater riders how are those steel haulers holding up? I live on the gulf and I would never build anything out of steel within a 50 miles from the water. What are most of you riders on here trailers made of? And I cant help but notice that most of your products are made from aluminum. Do they bend and brake from surf riding? Don't blast a guy for trying to make a buck and bash your own products at the same time. Jus sayin. So with that out of the way I have had a half ton welder on hitch rack Ive built for 8 years and it still has not sagged an inch.
