Turf Wars Jetski VS Surfer

then its time to go in or move down the beach...do u surf?? i do and it sucks when someone on a ski is riding near you...it is illegal (at least here) to ride in the surf so the surfers DO have priority..dont cause problems over crap waves..its not worth it....that why i ONLY ride at dawn and if someone paddles out i leave..simple as that
That's not the case here. After many chats with coast guard, fish & game as well as the SJSO, in Matanzas inlet we are not required to give any specific number of feet other than from shore. If they are willing to paddle out to the center break, then they have to deal with the jet skis.
However, if they are willing to paddle out to the center break, most of us will let 'em have it for a while. (a lot of work for short rides) they generally leave in a short while.
I quote the words of a Florida law enforcement officer...."just don't run them over".

That is likely because that particular inlet is not considered navagable.

But that guy was on a long board.....

I have noticed the attitude on Florida's east coast is different from California's. I have ridden at Sebastian with surfers, and they all seem really cool- they don't mind sharing the same general area as long as you are courteous to distance and don't buzz right up on them- that would scare the crap out of me too if I was the surfer. I've even BS'd with some of them sitting out there waiting for the next set.
In Cali it seems the surfer attitude is more hardcore and they are not as accepting- I am sure it may be the same down under.

What's the old saying again?? "only a surfer knows the feeling"..
And what feeling would that be? I've surfed for over ten years and I really don't see how the unique feelings you get from surfing are in any way different from the unique feelings you get from jet skiing, wakeboarding, snowboarding, sailing, moto-x, auto racing, etc.

Sorry, but being a surfer doesn't make you special.

That's very true in my experience. Even "surfers" in Huntington Beach, where I learned to surf, were "not allowed" unless you were a friend of somebody.

Surfers and jet skiers seem to co-exist here in Florida a lot better.

We only have issues when the surf is really good.

During hurricane Bill the surfers wanted the same waves we did. (4 different workable breaks here)
AllDayJay towed a distressed surfer to shore... straight through the line-up. They gave us no more crap that day.

Edge of my seat! Almost exciting as Jerry Jones losing a hood and still riding!

Had to earn your way to surf north HB back in the day. Now, its no big deal.

It's been a long time....1984 when I was there. But I did get a taste of the territory thing. Luckily, I made quick friends with some old dude, who was important I guess. He taught me to surf. What's really wrong is that I can't remember his name. It was always "thanx bud....thanx dude..."

well for me the feeling you get surfing a good wave dosnt compare to any other sport. Even jetskiing in the surf (and I'm allot better at surfriding a ski than I am at surfing even though I've been doing it my whole life). I do think it makes u special because it's not just something anyone can go do. Anyone can pull a throttle on a ski or moto or drive a car to some extent. Btw in Cali it is illegal to operate a vessel withen 300yards of a breaking wave. There isn't really any ground to argue with that. Just stay out of the way and there won't be any problems. Pretty simple.
I have to agree. Even as a less than good surfer. The feeling is something unlike anything else.

However, now that I couldn't paddle my way through a swimming pool............

Those of us pushin' 50 can still get a charge, ride a face, flip, roll etc.... with some horsepower under us!

So anyone can get into a racing sailboat and make it move?

I'm not saying surfing isn't hard, I'm just saying it's not as special as some surfers claim it is. And in no way is the elitist "locals only brah" attitute of so many surfers justified.

That killed me during Hurricane Bill when two surfers were waving off 40 jet skiers in the inlet, that did not work very well. They had the whole coast to themselves and they chose to line up in the inlet, WTF?

We have more problems with inexperienced kiters rather than surfers...the surfers stay in their little cove...the kiteboarders however are crashing their kites onto us as we are standing on the beach. The good kiters stay out of the way, but the bad ones are dangerous.

The kiteboarding should slow down a bit at the spot, since driving has been banned where they normally launch.
This does not make me happy. They normally ride when it's really windy and blown out.
But it raises an interesting question:

In FL a jet ski is registered asa a class "a" power boat.
Maritime law requires any powered vessel to give "right of way" to any wind powered vessel....
Are they a vessel?
Do they get right of way because they have no motor?
