Dont get one !! 4 strokes SUCK!!!! .. lol jus my opinion... and ill admit ive never rode a 4 stroke bike.. but damn those rebuilds will be costly :wavey: i picked up a kx125 on trade for my superjet and i love the thing to death. it runs abslutly mint. it was in amazing shape when i got it .. looked brand new its an 05. at first i was sceptical about getting it b/c it was a 125 and im 210 lbs and have been riding quads and 3 wheelers since i was small so i know a thing or too about riding. but wow i was so suprised at the power being a 125. ive drag raced this bike against a fully built up 2001 honda cr 250 and only lost by a bike or so every time.. not to much slower and mine is bone stock with carbon fiber reeds. however the 250 has 2 times the low end power. like when we go to the track my buddy can ride the whole thing in 2nd gear with out shifting. and i have to shift quite a bit and keep it uptop.. also a new top end kit is 100 bucks so it can be rebuilt every year for nothing. one other thing to is there ALOT easir to kick over. i see 125s on criagslist for like 1200 bucks that look sweet. so dont rule out a 125 as an upgrade. .... finally bought a sj eh? ... they get everyone

As I understand it, 4-storkes are harder to rebuild but require it significantly less often to maintain power. I have also heard that newer 4-strokers are becomming less reliable (need pistons as often as 2-strokers) because they are going with smaller skirts for more power.

I also know that some use titanium valves with bucket & shim adjusters. I have heard that these can be a biotch to adjust and it must be done to avoid burning valves. The new 4 strokes make sweet power but it comes at the cost of an increased maintenance schedule which will cost more because there are more moving parts. You gotta pay to play...

I'll take my 2 stroke 380cc KTM over a thumper anyday. :)

The only 4 stroke I would have would be a 250cc bike for the overall lightweight feel. Then again, i'd still rather have a 2t 125, or for damn sure a 144.

Ive been moto'n out on my roomates CRF450, and its a fun bike.... but for me, I would just want a playbike.... a bigbore/stroker 2005 or newer yz125. That would be a bad b1tch... and super light.

Just ride
I've owned both and honestly your not gonna beat a 4stroke mx bike in any aspect of riding. The only time you absolutely need a 2-stroke is if your gonna be attempting double backflips into a foam pit. The thumpers are a little more time consuming when it comes to engine maintenance, for some reason people feel intimidated when it comes to working on a 4-stroke but in fact they are as easy as a 2strokes they just have a timing chain and cams that even have marks on them to line them up so any idiot who isn't blind can line up a couple marks. Checking the valves with the bucket and shim is easy, you just need a feeler gauge and theres actually a mathematical formula in your owners manual that tells you what shim to put in when you check the clearance. It;s all easy stuff.

kawaboy, if your gona move up try to ride other peoples 250F's and see if you like a different brand before you go for a YZ. The 250F that i've liked the best so far for me was the newer KX250F w/ the aluminum frame. It handled awesome and had good power. A 125 is fun and all but it gets old after a while, in the long run it will require more maintenance. the power just wont match a four stroke. people will come up with the whole weight thing, and ill tell you the truth its a crock of poop you wont notice the weight difference. I'm only 5'6" and I came off of a 05' YZ125, the lightest full sized mx bike ever, and went to a 06' CRF450. I've never been in a situation compared to my 125 where i thought to myself that the bike felt heavier. the only time youll notice it is when your lifting it to put it on the stand. go thumper...

Four strokes do really suck to rebuild-very costly. I have gernaded every single bike I have owned along with all my four strokes including two yz250f and a crf 250. Costs alot, but if you maintain them and check valve clearence and throw new rings in every couple months your fine.

got a question, I sold my XR250 a while back, started thinking about selling my SXR and getting another bike. I do not track ride, just woods/trail riding. How is the power on the CRF250/YZF250 etc etc........... just curious........

its really whether or not you like the aluminum frame or good old steel........

imo 4 strokes are easier to maintain and if you know motors, easy to rebuild and it has alot of power at all rpm's......atleast the 450 does....i wouldnt ride anything smaller...pointless.....why not have more motor...unless you just cant handle it..

my clocks stuck on 4:20
the 250 fs are ok but imo. they are to light
i ride woods and traded my 05 crf250 for an 01 xr400
the 400 felt a lot heavier until i started it
smaller bikes are more work in the woods
its really a rookie thing to want a 125 because its light
i did the same thing
the larger bikes dont go that much faster they just get there without pu$$yfooting aroung
i just bought a 93 cr250 for $700 :arms:

No wonder you say the bigger bikes aren't that much faster... you have an XR400. It's a dog. I'd be surprised if the 250f didn't walk it in a straight. There isn't much question about which handles better, the 250f. Unless I did open riding, I'd rather have the 250f over your tank :cheer:

Wanting a lighter bike is common sense. Why do you think all the manuf. now a days try to make their stuff as light as possible? Less work (I'm talking about fighting the bike, not working the clutch alot, ect...) saves energy, which helps you ride longer and faster.

I know all about what it's like to ride a big bike through the woods, it's a straight up handful. What you have isn't a "Big bike" in the engine department, just in it's overall weight and size.

knock on wood i have been on four strokes since 04 and i have never had a motor failure, there is just no comparison to a 2 stroke anymore the thumpers just eat them up everywhere. and dont be intimidated by working on a four stoke, they are simple really nothing is hard to do, it just takes little more time and patience thats all, its just simple addition and subtraction to set your valves with the shim under bucket.

i too have ridden every four stroke there is out there and i do like the kawis best all around, now i know that you will think i am a kawi bias but they are just good everywehre, they arent spectacular in one region but they are awesome everywhere, they handle very predictable, the motors are good, they are dependable.

Big K how much do you weigh? if you are gonna be rippng around in the woods the best bike i ever rode was a 302cc big bore kx250f. it had an overflow tank for the radiator (i just put one on mine) so when it gets hot you dont loos your coolant. it had the best power for anything that i threw at it. it was great in slippery rocky nasty ******** and just great for everything, hill climbs, wide open stuff it was just awesome. the only place it gave anything up to a 450 was coal bank hillclimbs, but thats to be expected. oh and when i tipped it over it ALWAYS started...

By "Everywhere," you must mean on the motocross track. Look at any GNCC race.... it's a sea of Orange with some blue in there, and most of the Orange ISN'T a four stroke. It's a 250cc or less two stroke.

around where i live in the harescrambles there are a ton more thumpers then two strokes, and actually its alot of green and blue. and at the MX track its ALOT of green and some red and a couple blue, thats by me of course
