Came across this thread again last night, searching for something else, and checked out the TBM steering.

I would like to know if the yamaha steering system spindle (assembly) is similar in size to the UMI. Bottom line, does the locking nut (odi style) fit on a UMI steering system, and if so is it possible to buy just the nut.

Yes, the thread diameter and pitch is the same. The nut sells for $35.00

Thanks,

Tim

So if your nyloc nut is driving you crazy, buy the TBM nut.

Ahhh!!! it drives me nuts too....

Freestyleriverrat showed me the double nuts on his system...

He said it works well... I think Im gonna go the double nut route too.

Were did you guys buy your nuts  haha

I have "almost" ordered a new UMI system many times over the years but always heard that the nut has a problem (not the one behind the bars)

But since I finally have the bar setup just the way I like it I will have to wait to change somethign then I will get a UMI setup. I think the TBM nut will be the solution to the problem.

I just ordered my split nut yesterday from TBM. He did not know the price, but I did not care. I was ordering the throttle anyway, so he was just going to add it on.

He didnt know the price on the phone becuase he didnt want to actually hear you hit the floor when you have a stroke. He charged my buddy a large sum of money for the pair of them. And after riding for about an hour he took it off.

No first hand experience besides that about them. I am sure they work very well for other people out there.

I have had some issue with split nuts

The Split nut seams like a good fix at first however..Some have had varying success with them from solid to slippery.(Note:) Blowsion has them available at nearly 1/2 the price of Tims....Should you wish to try this.

My biggest gripe with them is that the set screw is VERY easy to strip the socket head allen slot out.
To torque the set screw correctly without turning the hex into a hole is nearly impossible. especially after a couple times on and off.
Salt water is also a big issue even with Similar metals(stainless on stainless) since it can require a bit of pressure to remove and often tension or light corrosion on the surface can impead the set screww from backing out. This also has a tendency to strip out the hex head.

It is true the nyloc only works once and should be replaced if taken off and on a few times...
In the end...Red lock tite with a clean post works with any nut to some degree whether it be nyloc or split.
Two nuts as discribed by Wax is the most sure fire method I have encountered.
Some have used a crown nut and pin like that on stock Kawi....
Its a certain problem...I wish They would just make the Post taller to fit 2 nuts easily or at least allow the nylon in the Lock nuts to thread all the way.

Mine drives me crazy also I was just talking to speedfreak at an event over the weekend about this. I was thinking about trash canning the umi and going back to stock due to the nut coming loose. I have even done the double jam nut thing and it was a pain in the azz. The locking collar looks like a great idea. What is the thread size and pitch of the stud any one know? I will order a split shaft collar from mc master and run a tap through it.

I also have the JSS thrust washer and it works well taking the place of the UMI thrust washer but does nothing for the nylon nut coming loose issue. IMO

No he will not!
Hey Mark, contact PDiddy....................... his is the nut with just a set screw............
works fine.

I have been toying with the idea of making some nyloc nuts with a set screw as BK mentioned, but I didn't think there was much demand for it so I haven't done anything with it........maybe I should do a run and see how it goes

Do you not need a flat machined on the threads? Or is it a set screw with a nylon button on the end?
