Unacceptable SURF boat mods - discuss

I'd like to see more footage of how to take a beating by a wave and not loose your ski. I've been lucky and always got that lanyard clipped and got out of the way. Only been in small surf as well. I worry if you grab the back of the ski and it noses hard you can end up pole vaulting or smash your ribs pretty good.

Happened to me on a surf board once got stitches in my thigh from the skeg. The water was so cold I didn't know it till I got out and blood dripping from my wet suit!

I saw it about 3 seconds before. Was fumbling with a lanyard. This was one of the smaller waves luckily. Once I saw it, I grabbed on and fanned my feet in the water to break myself from going with the wave as much as I could. I did grow up in San Diego and spent a lot of time boogieboarding. Same thing, just with a 250 lb board :^).

thats why u dont use lanyards in the surf

as someone who has taken many beatings the best way is to try to be pointing strait in and ride the wave pretty much like you said..you just have to be hanging way off the back on your stomach..if its super steep your gonna go over the bars..

if you are sideways to it just let it roll and hang on...

if its big and i know im going to get pounded i just push it away..id rather deal with a sunk ski than go to the hospital..

^^ exactly! I normally dont run a lanyard but Daytona requires one. I fell of my ski and pulled the lanyard out then remounted the ski and hit the start button and nothing happened. I was just about to get towed until I realized I didn't have my lanyard in. FAIL!

there's no one right way.....just hold the :):):):) on and dont let go!

yes, you will get pole vaulted off the nose at some point..usually happens when you stick the nose into the bottom, or drop in off to vert a face and you just go over the falls

I use a lanyard when there are people or boats around the beach...but for inlet surf riding in front of deserted beaches no way

I hope your ski wouldn't start and you weren't just resting. It's still a funny video and informs some non experienced surf riders how you can get pounded in surf. That was a small wave and it looked like you didn't see it coming. Always be aware of your surroundings in surf and if your ski won't start point the ski away from the wave and hold onto the outside bond rails with both arms and just let the wave push you and your ski forward. Less chance of getting pounded and separated from your upside down ski.

Looks like he was fumbling with the lanyard.

I love the lanyard it shuts the ski off when you ghost it in some un makable section . Hang on to it that's a joke right. It's not the years it's the mileage on your body that tells your mind to let go so you don't injure yourself. If your riding in the surf involves finding the flow of the wave and riding or sliding while be pushed by the wave your ski must idle because you are off throttle. If you eat crap on the first wave of a 3 wave set and your in the impact zone and your going to wear wave 2 like a hat while your fumbling with lanyard thats how it goes sometimes just give you ski a shove make sure its parallel to shore.Relax be prepared to go over the falls with your coast gaurd approved pfd.The ski will survive.

Great thread. I'll give a little of my input for what it is worth.

I like scuppers especially if you are riding hard, doing multiple flip, things like that in a row where it is important to get water out of the ski quickly. Would be nice to have it seal and not help sink the boat when it is upside down. That said, my current boat just has one bilge and no scupper...but I'm not riding hard and it is fine.

1" padding is a must for me if you want to do big flips. Thinking back on it now, I know 4 people off the top of my head who have shattered their heels flat landing.

I run a lanyard in small to medium surf, partially for safety of those around, but mostly because if I lose the boat I would rather have it off. Bigger surf or competition no lanyard. That extra time it takes to get a key back in can be really dangerous. We did a demo at the Nellscot Tow Classic a few years ago, that contest goes when it is 30'+ and conditions are good. I blew a flip on a set and did not get my lanyard back in...bad times.

Hood straps and a limiter rope are cheap insurance.

And Andrew...I got your stiff pole right here.

So true on the mileage and common sense part.

I didn't know falling was acceptable....

Here in Daytona, i always where a lanyard for a few reasons.
1. We ride on a public beach and there are people always on the beach. i dont want to risk a stuck throttle and the ski taking out anyone.
2. Back to the stuck throttle thing. Florida is close to the top of the list for saltiest water. Stuck/tight throttles are common...
3. After riding for so long with one, i worry too much about it when i take it off. This causes my riding to suffer and its less fun.
4. Even on the really big days here, the waves never break top to bottom. The wave still is uncomfortable when it hits you, but not in a head thrashing, whiplash, bone/boat breaking sense. it usually just sucks you up and holds you in the white water for a little.

I keep a lanyard on the PFD and one zip-tied to the bars for a quick plugin if needed.
The lanyard is a pain, but so much safer.

I hacked the end off an old lanyard and zip tied to my bars too... but ride with one on my wrist/PFD.

Someone design and manufacture a nice start/stop that has a lanyard and the option to start and run without the lanyard in if needed. Would pay $100. Thanks!

every year I take the lanyard material loop from the SBT posters at daytona and make a wrist loop lanyard. Just attatch a key piece to the loop with a small zippy.

then remove the s/s switch, slip the wrist loop over the bars...then put s/s back on

that way there's always one there, it's out of the way...and it will never come off
