Our I.T. department got a call saying someone's lap top was not working properly with the software that they used, so the it tech said box it up in the box it came in and send it to us and we'll get it back to you asap.......They received the lap top in a

UPS destroyed 2 $800 power supplies on me a couple years ago. I crated everything in wood on a small pallet, packed in foam and secured with plywood. I was out $2K total and they couldn't give two poops for my loss.

Many of us have shipped engines in totes without issue including myself. As long as it can't move and punch through the side, it should be good. The only trouble I can see is if one of their employees cuts themselves on the sharp ends of all the tywraps. I make sure to cut mine and rotate them so they won't be in the grab.

Wrap motor in garbage bag. Then use spray foam around the motor...........
One of the companies I used to work for had one of these for packaging headers and other heavy engine components, I used it a couple times to ship engines and engine components, that's the way to go for sure!

That's what I've done the last couple I shipped. Double box and foam. Pita to get out but doesn't get smashed in transit. And cardboard is cheaper to ship with ups.

the biggest problem i have with this whole deal is the fact that during transit they removed the items from the original container and put them into an ordinary ups box.... so the item could have been damaged when they were removing it from my container, it could have been damaged when they destroyed my container.... at this point who knows but i have been on the phone with them twice today and made sure that a note was put in the system that the item arrived in a different container than i shipped it in.

Lately I have built a three sides box with 1/2-3/4 plywood. Then drop inside a cardboard box. Tons of padding and packaging. One other trick is to wrap the whole motor in an old pair of denim jeans then pad it. At least if your box blows open the motor should still be safe.

This is coming from someone who has shipped probably 20-30 motors in the last 8 years

I just shipped a motor as well and they (Fedex Store) wouldn't take my motor packed in the tub. She said it wasn't packed properly and she would re-pack. I told her to pick it up and her frail 90 pound body struggled to barley move it an inch. I lol'd... and then I told her there is no way it will survive a cardboard box. I told her I received an item in the container in the exact same way and Fedex had no issue delivering it to me the first time. I didn't get to ship that day but I guess these stores are independently owned. I went to the next closest store and they took it no problem. Common sense is a thing people lack these days.... If I was Fedex/UPS driver I'd prefer a sturdy tote with handles over the packing job of some employee making $5.75 an hour who gives 2 poops what's inside. Good way for something heavy to slice a toe off...

When I packed the tote with @jo5hi3, every side was lined with card board, and all the corners were reinforced with folded up cardboard. The top was held on with over 20 zip ties....

They definitely dropped it from a crane or something.

I used to work for fedex. You have to assume any package you send is going to fall off the belt. It's 3-6 feet up. So pack accordingly for a 6 foot fall.

^ When I pack something I pretty much assume that the guy is going to just kick it off the truck especially if its something heavy.
At work we once dropped a server off at a UPS store, they packed it, it showed up damaged. UPS said they wouldn't pay on the insurance because it wasn't packed correctly. LOL. Where is the class action lawsuit for the insurance scam?

I shipped a small tig welder once (80lbs) and when the buyer recieved it, it looked like they ran it over with a truck, it was soooo beat up. They told me it wasn't packaged correctly, I asked them: how can anything survive being ran over with a truck?.. They ended up paying 2k to have it replaced after my dad got threw with them ha.

I own a repair shop and see ups daily, over the years I have had a few items come in damaged but they have covered it every time. Sounds like that's not how it usually goes.

We spend over $800,000 a year with UPS... abpout 10 years ago we figured out we were paying over $40,000 for insurance and were claiming less than $10K.
We stopped using their insurance and "self insure" without all the hassles.
