Other Using DAP WELDWOOD under 65 degrees

I really want to try and turf my tray this weekend.

High for sat(58) and sun(56) are below 65. I know it's very close to 65 degrees.

Application Temperature 65°F to 110°F
Service Temperature Range: -40°F to 180°F (-40°C to 82°C)

Last time I tried to turf a ski, I was flying blind and my friend had to jump in and help me.

Turf eventually peeled up in some areas and I don't want that to happen again.

Prob not a big deal but I wanted to check in with you guys

I will be roughing up the padding/turf...

probably run 3 coats on the turf...1 or 2 coats on the ski

I picked up the original can not the gel.

From reading some of the turfing posts, looks like original or the gel style will work just fine.

Should hold off for a warmer day in the next few weeks just to be on the safe side?

Gel or original?

You are pretty close to the recommended temps. A couple of shop lamps would be enough to get you in the 65 degree range. I know when I did our SN it was low 50s and it came out fine. I just gave it longer to cure before I dropped it in the lake.

Lamps and electric heaters help, but no gas heaters around glue vapor is highly combustible! Also fans will speed drying, but be careful because it is easy to blow drying turf pieces on the ground.

I turfed my ski 3 years ago right before Daytona when we had two weeks of below 65 weather. All the turf is still in good shape.
Use a heat gun and allow extra time.

Do NOT get too close with the heat gun......i did this with my sn and there was a small fire. And when i say small i mean my entire tray was on fire.

I like the gel, it seems to apply in a more consistent and thicker layer. I always do 2 layers. and Im not sure why you would need to rough up the pad or turf? I never have, and never heard of it. if you do be sure to clean all the sanding dust.

Gel:
I will be buying the gel this weekend too...the original didnt lay down as easy as I remembered.

I am not made of money but I want this to be as easy as possible...i am hoping the gel will go on a bit smoother...I will buy a few cans just to be on the safe side.

Sanding:

I was taught to sand the turf for a better mechanical bond. I have already sanded down the tray.

I also sand both sides of the padding and the bottom of the hydroturf as well. I just take a DA to it...then clean it with some acetone...better safe than sorry

I turfed my ski a couple of weekends ago in 50 degree weather. No problems what so ever.

I prefer original DAP. No gel for me.

When I turf I put a minimum of two coats on every surface.

No need to sand the actual turf. Just sand the ski's surface areas you are turfing.

I use a heat gun to dry the areas I applied the stuff too thick.

Using a minimum of two layer makes it a biotch to remove if you ever re-turf again.

I turfed my last Superjet in July 2008. I sold it in August 2012. I used my double layer method on that ski. There was not a single piece of turf anywhere on the ski that was starting to peel. I attribute this to my two layer method.

Here are pics of my turf job I did a couple weeks ago. The gunwales of the ski were already done. I re-did the tray bottom and side rails.
