So...is the new drinking game every time I read COMMUNIST DEMOCRATIC POWER GRAB I take a drink, or when I read GREEN NEW DEAL??? Somebody help a brutha out, please!!
I don't have enough booze in my house even counting the ethanol in our gasoline for those rules.

The water levels are rising, but I live in Wisconsin at 700-800ft elevation. If the water goes up 200 ft, I still won't care and the Great Lakes are still A OKAY!

It's Friday, who's drinking?

How much energy, manpower, money, and control would it take to overrule all the reasons to be honest about this and get thousands/millions of people to all collectively spin the same story and cover up some plot?

Believe what you want. In the end, if you really believe what you found on some youtube channel over information found on multiple independent sources, I worry for your children.

I found the video interesting, but I'm not saying it's a "plot". I am saying it's a complete over reaction. A convenient way to buy votes, and bash an administration that has tied itself to economic success, in order to win an election. A way do deploy electronic contact tracing and degrade privacy - how much freedom are people willing to hand over?

No need to worry about my children though, they're already through college, and have several years working for a federal agency that has more knowledge an insight on these matters then what is being reported by multiple independent sources.

Noah_g and smokeysevin I love you both. But I have to ask, do you know how silly you sound to a regular working guy like me?

I have seen so much stupidity result from the arrogance of expertise in my life that, please excuse me, I have to question your statements. Here goes:

At least te4250 looked at the "data" which NASA published above.

Noah_g or smokeysevin did you? Or did you just unscientifically knee jerk respond that "the science was pretty well worked out." Can you answer te4250's question why NASA used mm to measure mass?

I think you will have to ask the lawyer who wrote it, or better yet the law clerk who wrote the mass measurement "data" on NASA's website.

Because the website is a political document. Not a scientific document.

Or better yet assuming that NASA's "measurements" are accurate and just improperly described, do you see how a 3.3"mm" plus or minus 0.4"mm" model-predicted annual increase in sea mass exposes the political power grab that is the COMMUNIST DEMOCRAT POWER GRAB THAT IS THE GREEN NEW DEAL (i.e., no air travel, no fossil fuel (no combustion engines) no nuclear energy, no automobile, gut and rebuild every building in America, a Gov't guaranteed job, a Gov't guaranteed house, Gov't guaranteed health care, a Gov't imposed no meat diet, Gov't free money if you are unwilling to work)?

DATA-DRIVEN SCIENCE NO LONGER EXISTS IN AMERICA.

PERIOD.

GET OVER IT SHEEPEOPLE.

(Or would you have believed the Eugenics movement in America and Germany in the 1920's-1030's because it was "data-driven?")

I really think it goes both ways because your comments seem silly to a regular working guy like me.

Remember the good old days when we all used to argue when the new superjet was going to be announced, good times....
I also hear the shutdown is going to push B-Pipe production back another 3 months, LOL!:p

You are misconstruing "ocean mass" with weight. An ocean mass is a portion of the ocean that is from a certain area and is consistently different than the surrounding area, more or less. They are saying that from ice melt they are referencing, this in particular is causing 2.1mm thickness changes per year, compared to it's usual behavior.

I love you too Brutha.

But I would like a response from Noah_g and smokeysevin because I am not attacking them because I love them too.

They just likely put their faith in Man (drink) and in Science (drink), and worship the Earth (drink) and not JESUS CHRIST (and they are missing out because Jesus Christ's first miracle on Earth (don't drink yet...) was as a bartender changing six stone water jugs in to wine (John 2:1-11) - yeah baby, party time! So drink, drink, drink!)
I have very conservative values, I am a Christian, and I don't drink. That being said, I allow science to coexist with my faith.

Not being intimately familiar with the study nor its subject matter, I can't comment on any shortcomings, typos, or misrepresentations IF any are present.

As I mentioned previously, the process for validating studies, models, or measurements basically entails checking them with a secondary method and determining if the results are close. I.E. if you use a laser rangefinder to measure distance, you check it to make sure its reasonable. If it is, you can rely on it later. This is the fundamental method used by NIST.

I am a mechanical engineer (I know, no one asked, that's how you know I am legit.) as part of becomming a professional engineer we are taught not to misrepresent our knowedge base. I am not a nasa scientist/engineer. I work in product design and failure analysis. I am not willing/capable to pick apart a nasa report/document/webpage.

Basic physical principles still hold true though, if you measure the total area that is covered by ice, measure the thickness (or approximate it using valid parameters) then measure the change in area year-to-year, and finally divide that by the total area of ocean you could get reasonably close.

I am going to out myself here buuuuuuut, the oil and fossil fuel industry is on its way out or down regardless of which party is in power. (Take a look at coal for instance once the market said meh, the mines came to a halt) I am not saying that oil will go away by any means, transportation fully depends on it for numerous reasons. Our interstate highway system is built on 300+ miles between stops where you can fill up in 5ish minutes and keep going.

Oil production and ethanol production are heavily subsidized by the government and have been for decades which sort of throws the arguement about green being more expensive out the window. The market has basically decided that alternatives are cheaper or where not cheaper, people are willing to pay a premium for the alternative. Interestingly this is also part of why nuclear power is not as viable currently. Solar/wind/hydro + natural gas being cheap means no one wants to spend the money on nuclear.

As far as the green new deal mentioned above, that was from the Green Party so take it with a grain of salt, Jill Stein got single digits in the 2016 election.

I am firmly of the opinion that if we can do better, we should do better. Tred lightly, take only photographs, leave only footprints, all that. We should be doing something to leave the world a better place than we found it.

It feels like I am the only one with that attitude sometimes.

All I am saying is that even in math where things are supposed to be based off proofs, people tailor models to fit their means. I just got a paper from the society of industrial and applied mathematics with an article of why voter "discrimination' is bad. I can make the same model and make different but completely reasonable assumptions and come to a different conclusion. I'm not saying all science is that, and although you're and engineer and mathematicians hate engineers because you ride off our successes... , I appreciate everything that everyone in a STEM field presents because it expresses what the whole process is actually about. We are not gender studies majors and we make the world progress and become better. Science is the core to what everyone on this forum loves, and they are too quick to forget that.

Note that voter discrimination can mean a lot of things... it doesnt take a rocket scientist to realize it was about illegals and gerrymandering here.

Holy crap!

Can't you guys be a little less contentious?

It's beer and movie night.

(We watched Hacksaw Ridge produced by Mel Gibson last weekend, it was not only outstanding, it was true.)

Great movie. Although not true I really want to see 1917.

Unfortunately I’ll probably be watching Trolls World Tour

The sad part of this whole thing is I’ve been a Trump supporter since day one but after watching his daily performances during this pandemic I just can’t do it anymore. He had no grip on reality, has made endless bad decisions (made one or two good ones that were made way too slowly) and just talks out of his a$$ 99% of the time. It’s embarrassing to watch. And it will be his undoing. I thought he would sail in for a second term but there is no way in hell he will after this clusterphuck.

Oddly my wife who hates Trump, said to me all on her own, After watching his daily briefings, ”Trump is handling this well”

That Surprised me, she’s slowly, seeIng some benefit with him at the helm...

I let her take one of my Trump surveys I get, awhile back, she was surprised she agreed nearly 100% with his agenda... I could see the light dimly coming on...

I hear yeah on Trump, he’s his own worse enemy.. I seen him at a rally too. I have to cut him some slack..

It really is too bad, he really had the opportunity to be the hero and guarantee the re-election and totally pissed it away making himself look like a bumbling idiot. At this point I really think he’s his own worst enemy.

Yes, our president could benefit from hiring a speech writer and following the script, but is that what you really want? We are all so accustomed to watching puppets reading scripts engineered by teams of people who help manipulate the masses!

I'm really looking forward to the presidential debates, I can't wait to watch creepy Joe get ripped apart!

Best President in my lifetime. Period.
So, you would have preferred Hillary?
So, you will prefer Biden/Michelle Obama?
If so you vote on the person not on the policy.
Trump's policies have been the best.
Up until now. He got rolled by the Establishment.
The taxpayers should not have paid a dime to anyone.
It is up to you to provision in advance of an emergency.
Not for me to provide for you.

This isn't Britain, we don't have a monarchy, get off the Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton lineup. Obama pissed me off royally when he had the AFA website/software built in Canada. As much as I love our neighbors to the north, could you imagine if Eisenhower had the Mexicans build the Interstate? That was his baby(Dave Chhappelle voice)
