Wake Jumping Etiquette (Safety)[ORIGINAL THREAD]

I hope this doesn't come across too preachy, but we have a lot of people coming to Lanier this year, and there will be a lot of first timers. Just like in the surf, there are some simple rules when jumping cruiser wakes that keep everyone safe. Last year there were some close calls on the first day as people got into the groove.

There's a sketch at the bottom of what should happen when a BFC (Big F***ing Cruiser) shows up:

The general idea is that everyone gets in a line as shown by the black rectangles. The green ski on the left is doing the right thing - he's front in line so he gets to jump. You peel off, turn in, jump and then rejoin either line at the end for your next turn. The red guy on the left isn't making any friends since he's cutting people off and risking a collision with the green guy who is 100% focused on the wake by now.

That's the general way it works. Here are some do's and dont's:

DO pay attention. There will be a LOT of jetskis and there is sure to be a ton of other boat traffic, and they're not trying to miss you. Keep your eyes on stalks and remember that it takes two to collide.

DO look out for each other. If someone is separated from their ski go and tow them to it. If someone is in trouble, stop and help - just like in the surf. Just because it's flat water doesn't mean that it's safe.

DO try to keep in an orderly line - if you ride predictably then it's easier for others to avoid collisions.

DO wait your turn. There's usually room for a couple of lines on each side: one up front jumping the first or second wake, and one further back jumping the 5th or so.

DON'T loiter at the front of the line. If you're not going to jump then step aside and wave someone else in.

DON'T jump from one side simultaneously with someone from the other side. You really don't want to meet in the middle.

DO catch some SERIOUS air and have a ton of fun. Jumping cruiser wakes is awesome: they peel perfectly, there's flat water in front and behind, you're not going to lawn-dart when you land and there's no need to flush :)

I don't want to be a jerk, but if everyone follows a few simple guidelines then we all get to have safe fun.

Excellent Post!! I really hope that everyone reads and obeys the rules of the water. Last fall I enjoyed jumping the first set or two a couple of times and then retreating back to the less crowded 5th set that you mentioned. Sometimes it's still huge even back there. I can't f'ing wait.

Also, when the person in front of you turns into the wave, leave some cushion......... if you are following right behind them and they do a regular jump and land, they will start to move pretty quick, but, if the same person throws a Roll, Invert, Stab etc, there is a longer lag before they are up and running again.......... So please, allow some spacing..........

I don't jump a lot of wakes, but when I do, I tend to jump towards the boat not 90 degrees to the wake like in the pic. is that wrong?

Not at all - it depends what you're trying to do. It's good to experiment with different parts of the wake and at different angles. There's no wrong or right way - whatever works best for you and your setup.

for me I need to point toward the boat to drop into the trough of the wake to get the biggest jump, if I go 90 I skip the trough and have a crappy launch. maybe its diff with the big boats. I'm able to can-can and super man on an xlt wake with the way I discriped.

Yeah, what he said. Spacing is especially important when someone wipes out and, for example, breaks their left leg. Now, who would do that at Lanier...? (Must bring stronger painkillers this time!)

Well said Brit. Last year, everyone pretty much just came up with this idea out of their ass and it came out great.

I mean....if your CLEAR at the back of the line/by yourself/few people you can usually hit it bakc and not worrya bout it...but watching out still needs to happen even at the back of the line.

Also...BIG warning. Just like Brit said, this may be flat water but it can get way uglier then surf. There ALOT of traffic and not all boaters are that smart or nice, so in some cases they dont see you and smack your ass....it's over.

Yup, we also always jump in this pattern when following a BFC. It just kind of made sense to do it this way. The biggest problem is when the adrenaline and Red Bull gets flowing, some lose their mind and just go jump crazy. Hopefully most will see this post and follow this simple rule.

Before any of this......
Watch out for the DNR, or any other law enforcement on the lake.
They love to bust jet skiers for jumping wakes. :scared:
The law says you must be 100 feet off the boat. The best wake for rolls/stabs/flips is right in this area. They can and will fine the crap out of you.
Just keep an eye out for them. Its best not to jump anything if they are around.
Its best to relay a signal to your buds if you spot one. We pat the top of our heads to let each other know. Kinda weird but works good.

Speaking of DNR, Ronny how about a review on boating regulations in Georgia? I remember one of the times I was there they wanted us to carry a copy of our drivers license on the ski??? So I had to get mine photocopied and put it in a zip-lock w/ my registration.

Just a heads up to everyone.

Anything else? Ronny?...

good thread adrian...and not only for lanier! this is good info for any kind of wake jumping...

I cant tell you how many close calls weve had in the OCEAN because some noobs show up on couches and start racing perpindicular to the jump zone...

Good point RMBC!
Yes you are supposed to have ID with you. I got an id card for a few bucks so I would have to remember to get my drivers license out of my ski every time I rode.
The other rules are the same as anywhere. registration, fire ext, Reg #'s, and reg sticker.

Those rules for jumping will come in handy ecspescially domwn here at Lanier. During the weekend theres alot of boat traffic and rough water.

And the DNR are dickheads down here so if you spot one its best just to not jump because they will go out of their way to give someone a ticket for some bogus reason. Which is :bs2:

I have not gotten that impression (dickheads), they have been very nice and professional everytime we have run into them at the cove, even to go as far as to say Jumping is illegal, but if you are being carefull and curtious that they do not inforce it much........... Common Sense Rules.........
