Wamilton Hood Repair

OK... I got my Wamiltons hood in the mail today.... I need some help with suggestions for the repair...

It is a little worse than I thought it would be, but overall I think the hood is worth repairing.

There is a crack between the hood and the liner all the way down on both sides... the previous owner put rivets along both sides to hold it together but you can still squeeze it and it moves (the rivets are not holding it really tight...). I would actually like to get rid of the rivets all-together...

The second area is where he put a little glass over the back breather area.... that is coming up and needs a little tlc. That area is a little rough and I think I should clean it up if I want the hood to seal really well in that area...

I have done some glass work, but I have done nothing cosmetic... only reinforcing... so please... please.... if you can give me some help I would really appreciate it!!! Thank you. -Eric

Remember these pics show the bad areas... the rest of the hood is really good.

yeah. The guy that sold it is a member on here... not sure what his name is though. He was a pretty good guy, and was honest about the condition before shipping.

Hey Eric..Scott here. Cruising throught the posts and I seen yours. I was the one who bought your double trailer in the fall. Glad to see your working on the mods to your superjet. I didn't think you would let it sit long as stock. I myself picked up a used freestyle superjet right after getting that trailer. Hopefully we can get some early good spring weather for some riding...er..waving hopping. We were lucky to have that last surge of warm October weather to get out and ride a little longer. Hope you did as well.

I replied this this one, but seen your post about wanting an xmetal pole. I have that right now, but not looking to unload it. But, one thing I wanted to pass on is if your get one. Save our pole spring. My pole is -4 and although the set up is fine, you may need that extra lift after a whlie of riding when pole is more to the down position.

Glad to see your adding footwells too. Mine came already installed, but added a strait and angled foot strap towards the front. I plan on adding something..possibly 2 more footstraps..to hold the cuff of my heel in the footwells. Tended to slip out a little.

PM me your email and i'll send you before and after pics

cheers,
scoot

that's a tough fix right there! that area is where the hood presses pretty firmly on the hood seal when closing. It need's to be strong .
On the sides, I would just grind off a deep V shape and pour some epoxy and milled fiber in there.
good luck!

the xmetal pole is designed to be tightened so it stays in place.

Never cared for that set up didn't work for me I like the spring and to snug the bolts a little.:veryhappy:

i didnt either, at first. i rode other peoples' boats that had them and thought, 'eh'. i remember that it took quite a few rides to get used to it on my boat. now when i ride a ski with a floppy pole, i feel like i have less stability.

hehe... I had already ordered a WDK hood this morning before you guys even posted... I thought the hood might be a PITA to fix... I might try getting my money back from the guy that sold it to me. The pics he sent did not show the damage nearly well enough. I might just hold onto it though, and fix it in my freetime... it might be worth trying to fix... it might be worth it just to learn some new things as I go along with it...

I will admit that my ebay pics were not the best . However, I feel as though I gave Eric every out that I could. I even told him that I would not ship it to him for the price he paid ( i had no reserve on it and I felt it sold for significantly too much). Regardless we emailed back and forth and I sent numerous pictures to show the rest of the damage and made sure they were very clear. In fact I didnt feel comfortable selling it to him at all because I could tell he may not have been qulified to fix it. The hood really isnt as bad as it looks. I will say that it fell apart within the first 10 rides. Since then it has survived. The outside of the hood is nice and clean its only the liner that looks like that.

He sent me pics of it and I told him it would be only good to make a mold from but other than that.................I would have to say it is his hood now.

So you saw pics before I sent it to him?? I spent a lot of time communicating with him about this. I was very very honest with him. I told him if he still wanted it that I would take almost $100 off what it sold for. I did offer to refund his money in full before I ever packaged it up.

Yeah,

You were really honest about it.... I guess it was a little worse than I could see in the pictures. I am DEFINATELY not saying that it is your fault. I do think at this exact moment I have never attempted to fix a hood, but that will soon change. I ordered a WDK hood, and have decided to keep this hood to work on as a project.

As JetSkiFever said, he did spend a considerable amount of time communicating with me about the hood. I believe the pics that I took show the damage a little better than his pics..... but no big deal... like he said he took of a substantial amount of money from the original price to help to make up for the damage.

My plan is to take a dremel and cut a groove between the liner and the hood. I will take out all the rivets, and then epoxy the hood and liner together with some of the epoxy you get in the 2part squeeze tube.... then I will mix some filler with some epoxy and fix the back area and also use some thin glass and reinforce it back there.... it shouldnt be that bad... I think it should be pretty decent when Im done with it...

I didnt mean to make this guy sound bad... thats why I never gave his name out... I was just searching for some ideas on how to fix it right.... I will be anxious to see which hood I end up liking better between the wammer and wdk.... like Jetskifever said too... the rest of the hood is in really nice shape.... as long as I take my time and do the repairs well- I believe I got a pretty fair deal.

you made jetskifever sound bad at all. especially since he chimed in and said what he said. youre going to keep and fix it. cool.

do exactly what waterfreak suggested, as he knows hoods pretty well.

i just dont see the point in having 2 hoods. we're going to have to call you, eric "two hoods" fox.
