I used to agree. After seeing many many no foam skis over the past couple years personally has changed my mind. Put together right makes all the difference. Also the life jacket foam if you think about it a half a cubic foot supports 150 lbs+ is light weight, closed cell etc..
I should have put it in mine, but to late now.
No foam is more buoyant than any other. It floats what it displaces minus it's own weight. A life jacket is only making up the difference in your own buoyancy to keep your head above the water. Put a 30lb cinder block on a life jacket and it will be gone.
It might still not be a bad idea, just don't plan on it adding any more flotation than anything else closed cell.
