Now I will preface this by saying I am not a treehugger or flaming liberal of any sort , but I like to do my part, we are in a small town and we do not have recycling here .
First off I reuse plastic resealable bags, I use them once for storage of food then I wash them and use them for putting jet ski parts in when I pull something apart. I may use them over and over till I can't anymore but I never have to buy any to store jet ski parts.
I also do the same with any kind of resealable plastic containers, they are used for anything from storage of nails and screws to mixing up epoxy resin it, I realize with the epoxy resin I am only getting one addition use out of them but two is still twice as much as one. Sometimes you can peel the cured epoxy out and use them several times if you are lucky.
I use yard clippings, leaves, weeds, shredded paper, food scraps , tea bags and anything else I can find in compost piles, then use the compost in my garden every year , sometimes if I see a collection of bagged leaves on the curb I will also grab those and add to my compost piles , at least then I know where it is going.
I save all the egg cartons to start plants in, everything is started indoors from seed, if you buy the plants already ready to go from the store they are about $5 each, a packet of seeds is usually only a couple of bucks. Plus it lets me get a really early start on my garden which expands every year by about one third. I built a shelf thats behind my laundry room door, it used to be wasted space but now it has a light and shelves to start plants in, I also built shelves to go in the windows, after a while they go in the window, then outside, then in the garden when weather permits.
The newest thing I started doing is called the chip bag project, my old lady is on this funky diet and goes through lots of protein chip and skinny pop bags, I read about the chip bag project online and I decided to donate my used bags to them, but I take it a step farther and go ahead and fuse as many bags as I can together then send them. The project uses these chip bags , old socks and old jackets to make sleeping bags for the homeless, a worthwhile endeavor in my book, I would assume all the costs of sending the bags to be a tax deductible donation since it is far a charitable cause.
