What are you doing to save the planet ?

Now I will preface this by saying I am not a treehugger or flaming liberal of any sort , but I like to do my part, we are in a small town and we do not have recycling here .

First off I reuse plastic resealable bags, I use them once for storage of food then I wash them and use them for putting jet ski parts in when I pull something apart. I may use them over and over till I can't anymore but I never have to buy any to store jet ski parts.

I also do the same with any kind of resealable plastic containers, they are used for anything from storage of nails and screws to mixing up epoxy resin it, I realize with the epoxy resin I am only getting one addition use out of them but two is still twice as much as one. Sometimes you can peel the cured epoxy out and use them several times if you are lucky.

I use yard clippings, leaves, weeds, shredded paper, food scraps , tea bags and anything else I can find in compost piles, then use the compost in my garden every year , sometimes if I see a collection of bagged leaves on the curb I will also grab those and add to my compost piles , at least then I know where it is going.

I save all the egg cartons to start plants in, everything is started indoors from seed, if you buy the plants already ready to go from the store they are about $5 each, a packet of seeds is usually only a couple of bucks. Plus it lets me get a really early start on my garden which expands every year by about one third. I built a shelf thats behind my laundry room door, it used to be wasted space but now it has a light and shelves to start plants in, I also built shelves to go in the windows, after a while they go in the window, then outside, then in the garden when weather permits.

The newest thing I started doing is called the chip bag project, my old lady is on this funky diet and goes through lots of protein chip and skinny pop bags, I read about the chip bag project online and I decided to donate my used bags to them, but I take it a step farther and go ahead and fuse as many bags as I can together then send them. The project uses these chip bags , old socks and old jackets to make sleeping bags for the homeless, a worthwhile endeavor in my book, I would assume all the costs of sending the bags to be a tax deductible donation since it is far a charitable cause.

You can read all about it here:

I am not saying it is dying per say but I am very intersted in some of the things going on now like converting plastic waste into park benches, decking and gasoline to run in vehicles. There is a lot of interesting tech out there right now, electric vehicles are not one of them and that whole concept is not sustainable , Solar power cell wear out, wind turbines are a whole big bag of snakes in themselves.

I believe even Tesla is looking at HYDROGEN fuel cell cars again. recycling paper is not one of the because of the energy and chemicals used in the process, the best way to recycle paper is shred it and plants some more trees in it , the new hydrogen fuel cell electric hybrids look interesting though.

Trying to cut out all plastics. Mostly because of the health benefits more so then the planet though. I have cleaned up and kept tons and tons of junkie homeless trash out of the local stream by my house. But have since given up on that. Remember everything you donate, food/clothes/tents etc all ends up on the ground/creeks. They are not washing the clothes and jackets you donate, or properly disposing of anything. They get more free stuff and leave there dirty stuff where ever they are. Including food wrappers, toilet paper, water bottles etc...

The planet can be in its natural state if humanity would live like it did before we could control fire. The industrial revolution and population growth has and will continue to slowly change conditions beyond what they would otherwise be. Very few in a group will willingly pick up and dispose of their own waste. Humanity has always gone from rags to riches to rags again. Asking it to save anything is probably unrealistic.

I can stuff out of the garden and off of my fruit trees as well, and I only buy Classico spaghetti sauce, it come in Atlas canning jars so all i ever have to buy are lids and bands, I probably inherited enough canning jars to last most people a lifetime.

I have canned everything from homemade salsa, spaghetti sauce to pears homemade pickles , relish , figs and pears as well as making my own jellies and fig jams, pear peeling are used to make jelly then they go into the compost pile, nothing goes to waste if I can find another use for it.

The camper build has insulation I got from meal kit food boxes, if it will keep food good for three days it must be damn good insulation so I used it as insulation, it is basically foil covered bubble wrap, it was free so I used it. I saved the icepack in the freezer when the church had their food bazar I gave them to them so they didn't have to buy ice this year.

I am planning to scale up some , I inherited a hammermill , it's used to make cattle feed but it will pretty much destroy anything put into it, so thank wood chipper on steroids. I may even grind up some jet ski hulls with it , I just don't know yet , I have to figure out a way to power it first, I have an old two stroke golf cart engine I may use for that purpose.

I recycle everything metal. I WOULD do plastic too but there is NOT a recycler here for it??? If I'm walking trails, riding a watercraft, kayaking, at the boat launch,....I will pick up other peoples trash cause it pisses me off! I buy second hand whenever I can, MOST of my shop is second hand materials from the frame and lumber, to the insulation and overhead doors. Even my vehicles are recycled!! The last 4 I've had I bought wrecked and fixed back up!

Yeo I just got back from a trip to Flomaton Al. to pick up a load of plywood for $25 a sheet, brand new 23/32 top grade stuff, guy threw in a sheet of drywall which is all I needed at the moment for another 10 bucks. Deals are out there but you have to be ready to jump and have cash on hand to get them because they go fast !

I recycle all my metals too , I have an old homebuilt 5 x8 trailer I just start throwing metal cutoofs into till I have a full load , I also recycle all my old batteries, they have been paying good money for those recently.
