What do you look for in a hull?

Hey everyone! I’m sure most of y’all know me. I’ve been doing some composite work lately and have found a lot of passion into it. I started to do some testing on layups and different designs. I was wondering if I were to design a hull what would you guys want to see? What makes a hull for you guys? Price, flipabiltiy, ride ability, strength, weight? Give me some ideas I hope to start building some hulls on the side and come up with a more affordable hull for the young guys like me that want to get into freestyle but don’t have $10,000 to drop on a hull. Thanks for any advice!

Some people are probably going to respond to this with things like "just go buy something you'll be better off"

I'm not going to say anything like that, because everybody who built a good hull started with thier first hull at some point.

But I will say if you go down the route of doing something like this, make sure you go into it with the understanding that you are NOT going to save money, you're going to buy an education.

I actually already made molds, I have a complete ski now and really wanting to do this to sell to the average joe that doesn’t have a pile of money to spend on a hull. I’m 20 and have a great career path , but I’ve found in my spare time I’m always building skis, parts, motor. I figured if I can make a little money and bring a few more people into the hobby it’s a win win! But I’m also taking in opinions on what everyone is looking for in a hull. Flatwater, surf, etc

What I want is a better superjet. That market doesn't exist. I think it was @kevbo who said people don't by a/m hulls that won't flip with a throttle pull. I think he's absolutely right.

It's always something that doesn't fit or you have to modify to work. If my ported 701, b piped, msd enhancer, skat mag driveline won't fit without a grinder and drill I'm done.

I'd rather ride my 350 pound water logger SN. Frankly. I said in another thread the only hull I'd go after would be a Vision hull. I dont like Rickters freeride hulls. It's unfortunate cause they seem to be the best quality where your parts actually fit, but I can ride a superjet better.

That's my 2 cents. Just a better superjet. But I'm also probably not in the market you're after

I like the idea, a all around ski! That’s easy to set up! Maybe a touch lighter and rides good in any situation. I’ll keep you posted, I may have something for you soon!

I would look to something versatile. There`s a ton of short hulls on the market right now that are fun to ride for a few minutes, but it seems like prices are coming down because the market is flooded with backflip hulls and most people will never really spend much time flipping. While my RIP and Circus are fun for a little bit I prefer to ride the full length superfreak. I have been on a couple swoopy sided freaks but this one has front and rear rocker with a bit different bottom design. I have been told that it was one of a couple made with a badass bottom. It is fun to ride for hours at a time. That is where I see a gap in the market. The only hulls that seem close to that are the Toby T1, the badass which is no longer available, and the xft which is also not available,

I’ll come up with something for y’all! I see that also! Lots of surf hulls and freestyle hulls! But only a few in the middle

Superjets are getting harder to find. Try a Round nose copy that has removable hull sections next to the pump. Being able to easily change the length would accommodate any size rider and any type of riding. Raise the top deck to make the hood shorter so it wont get blown off on side landings. I wouldnt rocker the nose because it pushes too much water in your face.

Fit and finish as well as durability seem to be very important. Can’t go wrong with a super jet design then refine it as others have mentioned. Too many options for those who want to just flip, in my option that market is pretty full. All my friends who ride rickters, t1, badass, tigercraft all love my 96 sj with a LPW ported 760.

That is the the problem. There is not a 1 ski does it all platform. There are trade-offs. I have had a -4.3 Carbon Superfreak, it was too light. I love my Edge, but I cannot ride as aggressive as I use to ride my SJ on flat water, But it handles surf riding so much better. Personally I think the T1 may be the closest to the best overall around ski. It can do just about anything, You can trim the rear shorter for more of a true back flip hull or leave it longer for surf.......

Are you saying that you have made molds and then built a hull using those molds and that hull is now a complete running ski? If so that's impressive very few people make it to that point.

Yes sir, have the molds but looking to change them some before I build many and just want input on what everyone is wanting

I think that’s my plan, I have a few ideas to make a ski made for everything

A proven design and construction practices from a manufacturer who is known in the industry to be reliable, trustworthy and knowledgeable. There are loads of crappy hulls out there, and time has proven that even copying a known working design does not equal a quality product.
The design of the hull is a relatively small part in an overall successful hull manufacturing business.

Layup schedule, quality structural composites, the right equipment, experience and patience to make a good hull. Problem with making a hull cheap is the materials have went up substantially in the last year. For example VE resin went from 40-45 a gallon to over 100 for a gallon and shipping hazmat materials have gone up too. Say $2500-3000 in material for one glass ski alone and then selling the hull for 4500, you'll easily have 200-300 invested so you're working for less than minimum wage.

If you actually ride hard. And have developed and real riding skills. A superjet absolutely sucks. This is coming from a guy who can flat water roll a superjet. They suck for real riding. Good to get into. They just sucks for any kind of rotation or spin.

They are too narrow. Too long. Too heavy. The hood design sucks. The intake design sucks. Sure you could change some of that with a new hull. But why. If you just wanna cruise a lake like a pud, why would you want a aftermarket hull? Your not gonna do anything with it. Except pop the hood and spend hours telling the 550 guys about it.

A short wide hull is the best. For everything but big surf. Make a quality hull with a badass breathing design. A large engine bay. And make a adjustable ride byt the length of the ride plate. Otherwise not much you can innovate. The leading company added tubbies and a couple lines for their 2021 model.

Let see, I have "real" riding skills! I ride short fat hulls and can make them rotate and spin! Anything longer and skinnier than whatever it is Im riding, well just sucks. They cant haul my 80 pound head around.
