What do you look for in a hull?

You want to build a low cost all around general purpose hull to get more people in the sport and you're testing it with a 1200?
Was talking with a buddy the other day about this. You come out with hull and set it up for test rides with a huge motor. You put someone with little experience and throw them on it there is no way for them to really get a good feel of the ski... 2014 I went to WF and got to ride several skis. Both of the new Havoc's (964/1105), TPE900 comp motors. Could barely hang on. Then hopped on one of Taylor Curtis's Edges with a 701 in it. You can guess what ski I had the most fun with. Personally I believe hull builders need to have a demo with a smaller motor where you can feel how the hull rides. With any large motor damn near any short hull will flip... but you cannot really tell how it handles when you can barely control the power... just some of my thoughts.... look forward to what you have working on.

Its hard to find young people that want to come out and ride for free anymore. We need more new hype than new hulls. I think a flip hull can be made/sold much cheaper than they currently are. Boat building is seldom a profitable business. Do it as long as you enjoy it.

Ski clinic had a build a bob kit for a while. I think it was the gen 2 where you could buy it cheap and put it together yourself.
 
Josh, these guys are trying to make the point that a 75inch hull with a 1200 is overkill for a beginner rider looking to get into freestyle. That’s 9 inches shorter than a stock superjet and a ridiculous amount more power. Start with a -3 to -6 hull, a little bit more rocker, better intake tunnel and pump tract, and better hood design. And 30- 50lbs lighter than stock superjet. Then add a reasonable driveline like a ported 61x\62t or less than 900cc. So they can feel how the hull turns, rotates, and pops out of the water. A few years ago it cost $1200-$1500 in all materials to build a hull. A bit more for carbon. Do it yourself kits are crap unless all the inserts are put in with a quality jig so everything lines up properly. Another reason a lot of AM hulls were junk brand new
 
Right now it’s around 75 inches but may change before I start to sell depending on how everything turns out. The test motor will be a 1200.
If you are trying to base it off of people with limited cash, trying to get into the sport with superjets then the hull needs to have a superjet with basic bolt on driveline for testing.
 
An edge wont flatwater flip with a small engine but will with a dasa 950 and a skilled rider. You'll get more interest with what a small engine powered sub 900cc's and no power valves ski will do than with a large engine. A good rider with the most basic bolt on 701 61x in a shortened rockered heavy superjet will flip off a mediocre boat wake.

You are over simplifying what makes a hull good, rocker, width, pump location, intake design, chines, side angles, etc all make significant differences in how a ski handles. If you think nobody has attempted what you are proposing, you haven't done enough research. The features that make any one hull better suited for a specific application can't be simply reduced down to a couple simple changes to the mold.

Glass will stretch more than carbon when it is loaded so they are seldom used together. They can be mixed to suite a special purpose but generally not. It is common to see a light weight glass part use some carbon whenever it needs extra stiffness.

A really good point I think a lot of people don't understand the issue with difference in stiffness of the two materials so they don't play together very well.

Yea I guess I just meant the use of graphene in general.

I know it has to be strategic. I used some carbon cloth in my tray and a little in my engine compartment.

I just want to see graphene become relevant!
