What else should I do when my ski is all torn apart?

My ski is well overdue for a cosmetic facelift (it's looking very beat up) and there are some places where I need to make repairs. One repair is at the right rear where I have some nice cracks under the bondline from 3/4 barrel rolls. So, here's where I'm at in terms of jobs to do:

If I'm repairing cracks then I really should reinforce.
If I'm reinforcing then I'll need to refoam.
If I'm refoaming I may as well raise my footholds so I can getting more padding under there.
Also if I'm refoaming then I may as well add trim, or at least a trim cable tube.
If I have it all torn apart, then should I add a side rear exhaust?
And if I'm doing that, what about -2" off the hull?

Yikes! Suddenly this job is snowballing, but I have a cascading list of "well, I may as well take this opportunity to..."

So, what else would I be nuts not to do while I have everything torn apart?

Do you have access to a sandblaster? While my ski is apart, I'm cleaning up all my parts and giving them a fresh coat of paint to keep the corrosion at bay.

If you ride a lot of flatwater, you'll love cutting the back of the hull. I wouldn't bother with the side rear exhaust unless you need to plan to run dual scuppers and don't have the space in the back. That's just more work that will only dirty up the ski more.

You're starting your winter project kinda late aren't you?

Yes - but I had a bigger winter project: http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/70245

So much to do, so little time....

That actually got me thinking. I started adding up weekends, and it doesn't look good. Still on my list to get done before I ride:

Got to finish the photo sensors at the new electric gates - 1 weekend.
Got to build and backfill a retaining wall - 2 weekends.
Got to redo irrigation to all the tubs and hanging baskets now the new patio and deck are done - 1 weekend.

So, that puts me into early April. Then I have a couple of weekends work just getting my ski back to where I can ride it, what with a new motor to drop in an everything.

So, I guess the above list is next winter's project: It'll be May before I can ride right now even if I don't do any of that stuff.

Maybe the cracks will get really bad this summer and I'll just have to buy a new hull next winter....

Now you're talking. If you do want to do it, you could do all the ski work slowly during the evenings. It's not like you need daylight to do any of it. You might could talk me into helping if you can help get my permission slip signed.....

Probably going to wrap it.

I actually like my Kicker footholds, except you can't fit much padding under them. With wrestling shoes my feet wedge in very tightly and comfortably, and they release well. I would like some more padding as I approach my dotage though....

how many times have you messed up your angle, knee?

Knee, never. One broken leg through inexperience, and a bunch of painful ankles, but from flat-landing rather then getting caught up. The only time I've ever got stuck in the holds was when I broke my leg that time at Lanier, but I've landed like that several times since with a little extra experience and with no negative results.

I am just in the middle of a little mini-makeover of my ski.
Nothing broken, but I had a couple weekends available, so I decided to do a couple of things to make sure my season goes well.

  • Ordered a new OEM bendix (ouch)
  • Ordered a new coil, terminals, boots
  • Cleaned up wiring inside the ebox
  • Rewired bilge pumps to get power and ground from inside the ebox
  • Replaced all ring terminals
  • Put dielectric grease on all electrical connections
  • Attempted to seal off the leaks in my ski
As far as the leaks go - I am not sure I fixed it, but I hope so. After every ride, I got about 1/2 - 3/4 gallons of water out of the drain plugs. I found that my bulkhead separated from the bottom deck. I didn't structurally fix it, but sealed it off.

I used the grommet and sleeve from the stock overheat sensor.
