Super Jet What should i do?

So the dealership contacted Yamaha and they said they need a quote on the repair cost. they're sending me to a place that does all their work for the quote tomorrow. I talked to the guy over the phone just now and he said he would quote just the cost to repair the cracks. I told him I was hoping to get the whole ski quoted for new paint since I get new cracks every time I ride. He also said that it isn't gel coat because the ski is made out of SMC? is that right or does this guy have no idea what is going on? I always read you guys talking about gel coat???? He said if he had to replace the gel coat it would be cheaper for them to send me a new hull??????? maybe I heard him wrong but im starting to get a little worried here. can any of you chime in (especially aytee) and validate/contradict the claims he is making?

I am pretty sure the bottom half is gel coat and the top half is painted. Fiberglass bottom and smc upper half.

smc bottom.. glass upper... everything on the new ones is gel except the hood.. sounds like the guy you talked to doesn't quite know.. smc is gelled also..
problem is... gel doesn't crack unless the glass flexes/cracks/bubbles... personally i think(going by pics) there's a glass problem behind the gel coat, so painting it won't really help much...

either way, if they pay to have it painted or whatever repair that guy is going to do they are accepting that there is a problem. if it doesnt fix it and it cracks again they would be hard pressed to not do anything about it then.

you make a good point.. but if it takes 2 times to fix it then it's been painted twice and could be more prone to chips and such... plus... at this point he won't know if it fixed it or not until next year, and then it would be down time during ride time.. nobody wants that...

well Yamaha isn't going to do anything so im not sure what to do at this point. I have it on CL but because of the cracks im assuming im going to take quite a loss if I do ever end up getting a buyer. What a disappointment. I'll never buy anything Yamaha again. I may have just gotten a lemon and I understand most people get a good product from them but the fact that they wont make it right pisses me off. I'll be sure to post lots of pics and videos of future cracking so you can all see what poor quality Yamaha is ok with passing off to people. I'm going to make it my personal goal in life to make Yamaha lose money in the jet ski market. By next year this thing will have so many cracks, it will look like its covered in spider webs. I cant imagine the statement that will make to potential customers.

aytee, what do you think is the ballpark cost of having a ski painted and possibly repaired based on the limited info you have? Also, I know its a longshot but do you have any contacts in the Denver area that you could recommend? The place I went to is Mountain Marine, so I'd like to avoid that place lol.

With all the crazy aftermarket hulls and rockered SN tearing up the scene.....it won't be long till Yamaha doesn't ship them to the states anymore. I've seen it take months to sell A superjet at a dealership. Maybe I'm wrong but I believe the standup marketshare for new superjets is getting spread pretty thin.

These cracks are visibly noticeable from 10 feet away but it was almost impossible to get them to show up in the pictures with the lighting i had. the first 4 pics were taken at 3" intervals. the cracks are on the bond line around the top side of the top deck and stretch about 18". the other cracks are where the top deck meets the hood. crappy pics i know. I'll have better ones to send to yamaha.
omfg WOW
They do away with the warranty and then produce CRAP because they know there is no recourse. WOW, my respect for Yamaha has drastically deminnished .
If you do not ask the question the answer is ALWAYS NO.

it says for race use only. theres no warranty on race units. if you want warranty, go buy a seadoo.

I've seen yamaha warranty a topend for a yz250f one time. Had one practice on it. I think your dealers probably a bunch of pricks. Have another dealer call yamaha for poops n grins.

Whoa - Let's not steer him the wrong direction - The fact is that the Top Deck IS Gelcoat. The hull is SMC that has been painted. Been this way since 1996. Gelcoat does not adhere well to SMC and cannot be used in an SMC mold the way it can in a fiberglass mold. The Smc portions (hull bottom and hood) are painted.

That being said - FPF, Who did they send you to for a quote in Denver? It will be a Gelcoat repair since its on the top deck.
I have another place you can also check with. those cracks are likely the result of the gelcoat being too thick - and they will continue to happen unfortunately, even after repair.

And as a last resort, I have the Colorado Yamaha Rep's name if needed.

you sure they didn't change that on 08+??? cause when i painted my 2012 I'm pretty sure the bottom is gel as it isn't a matter of mills thick as much as it was like 1/16" thick black before I hit substrate.... I'm not steering anyone in the wrong direction... I'm just going off of what i have experienced personally...

yamaha also has a customer service #
i dont know it but if you can find it , im sure your dealer can give it to you or its in owners manual
i will tell you that sometime cust serv has more pull than warrnty dept
trick is to be polite , never curse at them ,explain your prob
there gonna ask you to take it to a dealer - explain you have done that and your making a follow up call asking for good will
dont demand anything or say sue or lawyer ect
there is a decal under hood that has primary id # on it you will need that # it will be like f1k 123456
yamaha is a good company if your dealer did his job 100% then this would prob be taken care of by now
i just got 4 new motor mounts fr my 08 3 months after my ext warranty expired
its all how the dealer presents your concern

best of luck

If your looking for a painter, let me know, good friend of mine who does a lot of side work and is also one of best painters in Colorado, he painted mine 4 mabe 5 years ago and it's still solid, not to mention its a sick ass paint job, unfortunately Yamaha is just another company that is so big unless a bunch of boats are messed up they don't care but keep calling and call yami headquarters instead of going thru dealers

My guess there is that they are using some sort of epoxy based paint. Gelcoat just does not work well with SMC. So, to be fair, no I am not sure on the '08 and up (and perhaps its just the black ones???) But, it is not likely to be Gel. FWIW my experience comes from working in boat building and marine industry for 20 years... Sorry if i came off a little rude. Just don't want misinformation to be spread. This question comes up all the time. People always asking if they should "re-gelcoat" their bottom on their SJ.... NOOOOOOOO!!! :D

Either way, the OP needs Gel repair on the top deck. Agreed! Perhaps with some reinforcement in that particular area to stiffen it so it won't crack the too-thick gelcoat.
