Super Jet What should i do?

well if its just gelcoat and not structure why not go w a sweet wrap?
my bud has gotten into wrapping cars and stuff was just @ his shop and all i can say is wow!
really trick stuff coming out in the wrap work

My guess there is that they are using some sort of epoxy based paint. Gelcoat just does not work well with SMC. So, to be fair, no I am not sure on the '08 and up (and perhaps its just the black ones???) But, it is not likely to be Gel. FWIW my experience comes from working in boat building and marine industry for 20 years... Sorry if i came off a little rude. Just don't want misinformation to be spread. This question comes up all the time. People always asking if they should "re-gelcoat" their bottom on their SJ.... NOOOOOOOO!!! :D

Either way, the OP needs Gel repair on the top deck. Agreed! Perhaps with some reinforcement in that particular area to stiffen it so it won't crack the too-thick gelcoat.

yea no hard feelings, i own a body shop and do a fair share of fiberglass too... come to think of it i wonder if the bottom isn't glass after 08... i believe they changed the design of the lower hull in 08, i guess i've never paid attention to the inside but if i remember right it looks like laid glass, not the smooth look of smc... now you got me thinkin and i don't want to pull mine out to check.. haha... the hood for sure is smc, cause even the paint don't stick to that very long...

and fpf as far as a wrap goes, you'll need to fix the cracks before you wrap it... moisture will get in behind the wrap and cause it to delam from the hull...

The bottom is "SMC" because it had the motor mount bosses and stuff in it. (molded on both sides) I don't really like all this smc vs fiberglass talk all the time cause all kinds of stuff people call "fiberglass" have actually been SMC for 20+ years

haha good call.. i didn't even think of the mounts... and i do agree all the blends of everything and how it's used these days is nuts... try to keep up with all the metals used to build cars, it'll make your head spin, there's no such thing as steel anymore...

As an owner of a body shop and a person who repairs composites shouldn't you know exactly what something is made from? I'm sure you won't be laughing when you make a mistake requiring you to redo your work.

The 08+ bottoms are not gel coat or made in an open mold.

I would be willing to bet that whoever said the Gel was too thick is correct and or the glass is too thin. Cheap non vacuumed aftermarket glass parts AWAYS come with big cracks all over in the gel brand new and the gel is always real thick in those spots.

Unfortunately I did not get to quote you before you edited. You obviously did not know that smc has glass strands in it.

I make finished gel coat parts without vacuum and none of them have cracks all over them. If you see cracks in the gel the mold has been damaged and is transferring to the finished part. This is directly out of the mold and has nothing to do with cracking due to use.

I DO know that it does, sometimes. but it could be carbon or any type of reinforcement, not always glass. I edited my post cause it came out sounding like I was trying to fight with you and that's not what I meant to do. And I apologize for that. I do custom work for an offroad shop that often involves making fiberglass parts not made for quality show cars into something of quality (like full fiberglass bedsides. What I was referring to by poor quality and not using vacuum was an example of crappy quality where a curve of bodyline will be just gelcoat over 1/4" thick and by the time It is shipped and I install it cracks.

obviously you missed the part that stated i didn't pay any attention to what it was made of(paint prep doesn't vary between gel and paint when you already plan to start with epoxy primer), i never repaired anything.. idk you guys can bicker all you want weather the bottom is or isn't gel ... i'm not sure what it even matters honestly... it's an old thread, seems to me like you guys are just trying to point fingers at the cause of the problem, the guy is just trying to get it resolved by yamaha... the bottom deck is irrelevant in this thread... and like i stated before, i'm just going off what i know from when i painted mine.. and the bottom sure did sand like gel, smelled like sanded gel, thick like gel, chipped like gel... but it must be paint, i'm not sure, i didn't care and i'm not going to strip it down to look now...
