I've never had a Chevy leave me for dead, been driving them for 20 years. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid. Toyotas are ugly and always will be.

I own a Silverado as well and I’m always having to do some type of repair. My Tacoma, never. I respect your opinion about them being ugly but you know what they say about opinions.
 
Man tacomas are made out of gold.around here. People want 7-8 k for ext cab 02 models with 250k on them. Are people really getting that much out of these trucks? I worked on them for years and know them inside and out but when I was shopping for one I just couldnt justufy spending that much for a truck with that kind of miles. I had a 10k budget and couldnt touch what I needed( crew cab) for that price with out it having a billion miles on it.

There's deals out there to be had.You just have to be patient.l'm around the car business on a daily basis,but it was just as hard for me to find one for a decent price.

Lately i've been searching for a domestic full size truck around $10k, F-150, RAM 1500, Silverado etc. My criteria is a well maintained truck, clean body, and around 100k miles. Then i'll install a double-din radio with apply carplay and back up camera.

This thread reminds me of most threads. Some how all these people are having issues with a product, and I'm over here using my original Dremel(since age 9), my NES doesn't need to be blown into, my 20 year old PC still boots up win 95, and my cars out last the rest. I must actually take care of my things...

Oh yeah, I got over 1200 hours out of my 2011 SXR engine, and I broke it in with synthetic oil. Queue the haters. My $hit works. Just take care of your crap and buy into platforms, not one off models.

Can I ask the poster why he's not considering a car? 3500lbs is around the max sedans.

I have a 2016 Hyundai Azera on lease .. it has nearly 300 hp and plenty of torque to pull a boat. The same motor is in the Sante Fe and it pulls 5000lb. The problem with my sedan and most likely others, is that it's limited to the towing capacity of a class I hitch - 2000lb towing capacity and 200lb hitch weight.

But I just looked and now Draw-Tite makes a class II hitch for my car that brings it up to 3500lb.. I can't find an official figure on my car for it's maximum towing capacity. My car has 3" longer wheelbase then the sante fe so it's okay there. I wonder if I put the trailer brake controller that I can pull this boat.. Thoughts?

EDIT: I think also that the gearing in the transmission would make a difference in towing capacity.

So my owner's manual says they don't recommend to tow with the Hyundai Azera ... but then it says to use the GVWR rating to determine maximum towing capacity.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) = 4828lbs
Curb Weight of Vehicle = 3684lbs
Left over 1144lbs. Definitely exceeding the limits if I sit inside the car and hook up the trailer.
 
Maybe i missed it but are you looking for new or used? Also Tesla coming out with a pimp pickup well I hope lol.

Used. I've been looking for a very clean, low mileage 2004-2008 Ford F-150 under $10k. I think it's the best value and meets my needs. Currently i'm waiting for year end bonus at work and tax returns so I can buy with cash.

04-08 triton engines were the years with the 2 piece spark plugs that broke off in the heads. I had quotes for $1200 to replace the plugs on my 06 F150 5.4 since everyone claimed one or more were guaranteed to break off in the head. You might want to verify the truck has the new plug design if you find one. My 06 F150 was a good truck otherwise ( I put 120k on it ) - but my previous 99 F150 blew a spark plug out of the head ( another known issue ) so I was done with fords.

I skipped the plug change and traded my 06 F150 for a 4x4 Tundra in 2012...

Used. I've been looking for a very clean, low mileage 2004-2008 Ford F-150 under $10k. I think it's the best value and meets my needs. Currently i'm waiting for year end bonus at work and tax returns so I can buy with cash.
I have around 145000 on my 06 5.4 currently. Previous owner did spark plugs but if you're a mechanic I'm sure you can handle the spark plug issue if it comes about. All of my issues have been minor. I am also in the Midwest with lots of salt and rust buckets here. Surprisingly mine has very minimal rust. Truck had 110k on it when I got it 5 years ago.
Coil boots/coils(otherwise misfires in rain, super easy fix) you can replace all coils for cheap but for me I just needed new boots on a few.
4wd solenoid and a tap on the 4wd motor when I first got it, no issues with 4wd in the 35k miles I've owned it since.
Power steering pump/line, cheap fix(not a common issue at all)
And a couple studs rusted/broke on my exhaust mani recently and now leak.
You might not have any of these issues.
All orignal transmission and engine. I haven't had any of the cam phaser / excessive ticking noise and I'm not easy on my truck. I also use Motorcraft 5w20 and Motorcraft oil filters(have to use them due to the special valve they have)
I would highly recommend a programmer on it. Otherwise the pedal is very laggy and the shift points aren't real great. But they're awesome trucks. My dad and uncle previously had that generation 5.4 and loved it too. We have a 06 work f150 with the 4.6 that lasted 230k on the same engine towing a trailer loaded down with tractors its whole life.

We also have a 2006 f350 box truck dually(huge heavy truck for this motor but surprisingly it hauls decent) running the 5.4 with over 110k now and only issue was coils, fuel filter and exhaust manifold since we've had it for a few years and that thing gets beat on by alot of employees.

I don't know much about the cars in your area, but wouldn't rust be an issue with older vehicles? If I'm paying good money for a car it better be clean. Not sure if it's worth it to look at buying from another area. I'm guessing it would push you way over budget. In my area (Las Vegas, NV) rust does not exist unless the car is from out of state. I have a 1990 Toyota pickup and it is spotless.
I'll also keep he Toyota fan club going. They are great and you get what you pay for. Even their minivans are tough. My 2000 Sienna is currently at 249k and runs great. I've pulled the same boat you own and probably done a handful of other things it's not meant to do. Im extremely impressed by the mom missile. It also gets into parking spots easily, just ask Kaylee S. Lol.

35k in 5 years? I put 26k on my f150 in past 15 months.

I'm sure that there aren't any rust free areas in the Northeast lol

I forgot about the spark plug problem on the F-150's. I ran into that problem on a Navigator many years ago. I'm not going to let that deter me because they make the spark plug removal tool.
 
Just use a 1/2 in impact on hot plugs and they will come right out. Thats how I did them on several fords and it worked awesome. Only had one stick on me. Picked up an 05 4runner yesterday for 2500. Higher miles at 211k but for that cheap I dont mind. Was originally gonna fix and flip to keep workin towards a tacoma but this just might do all I need it to do and keep a pile of cash in my pocket.
