Doing it right is not getting a SBT motor, you might end up withAgain it is a used motor if I was to buy it I would still do a full rebuild on it before it went into my ski. But that's me do it right the first time.

I had some bad luck with them on a seadoo motor, the cases they used were complete junk and would blow out base gaskets until i had the cases repairedDepends on the intended use. IMHO, there is absolutely nothing wrong with an SBT motor for recreational use.
Yeah, their case halves probably are not matching - but I've never seen that to be a problem in their motors and I've installed a few.
And I really don't know how an SBT rebuilt cylinder could betier in any way than a "regular" used cylinder. They don't take ported or decked cylinders and if the sleeves are bad, they get replaced.
I've personally installed SBT motors in Seadoos, Kawis, Yamaha's, and Polaris' over the past five years. Not a single one came back to me.
I wouldn't use an SBT motor as the base for a performance build, sure. But for recreational use, the ease and affordability of an SBT shortblock is pretty tough to beat.
PS: And if it does blow, you have a 1 year no-fault warranty.
Being in Edmonton Alberta Canada with economy booming the way it is. Boring and honing a used cylinder costs around 100 a hole because I phoned around. Buy the time I buy an ship this part and buy and ship that part whats an extra 100 bucks to have it built for me. Waverunners start around 2000 and only go up so going a 701 that route isn't worth it and then I still have to rebuild a motor because a used motor is still a used motor. If I went the jetmanic route and bought a 718 can I even run it with a single carb? I only play on flat water and the wake from my buddies supreme wake/surf boat. From the riding I did do on it even with a worn out poor running motorI was happy with the power. My ski is piped and also has a hooker prop and a mild scoop intake grate I also know when I get together with xjcrawler and truerider411 and friends. At some point I will take one of there skis for a rip and that will be the start of building a custom ski or buying one because they are becoming more common on the used market around here.
Doing it right is not getting a SBT motor, you might end up withtier cases or cylinders then what you had to begin with. If you can get a used motor with good compression and a clean crank, whos to say it wont last as long
