Super Jet What would you do?

So if you've seen some of my other threads you know I bought a SN superjet but today I realized the rear cylinder has 30 psi compression. So here's my dilemma. Work is not as busy as I was last summer so I Don't really want to start spending with the visa because I've been laid off in the past because I am a tradesmen and its the way things go. I do have a 91 kawi 550 that I love to ride. So here are my options. Option A: Sell the superjet "as is" for whatever I can get and continue to ride my 550. Option B: Do a total hull up rebuild on my superjet and make it my own ski. Complete with a new motor from SBT. And once its done sell the 550 to pay for the build. Option C: ride the 550 and put the superjet in storage until work gets busy again. then do a rebuild. (could be a long wait). With the kawi 550 I will also mention its bone stock and the motor has never been touched so at some point it will need a rebuild too. And because parts are a lot more rare they are more expensive. Also Because I'm in Canada I take it up the ass shipping up here from the states. With what skis have been selling for in less than a day I could easily get 2000 plus on a ski that doesn't run very well. I would like to have two skis my main one and a back up but that isn't going to happen right now. My superjet has a full pipe, R and D ride plate and intake grate. It also has a hooker impeller. but I would take it out and sell it separate.

chances are all your sn needs is a hone or maybe a bore and a set of pistons and rings, no more than 500 bucks......
I come from the mx racing world and the age four strokes where if one parts goes you do the whole motor. I just don't want to put in a top end and have a bearings in the crank go. I've seen it happen numerous times where something went in a motor they only fixed the part that went then the next weak part goes an hour later. I'm not the original owner and I have no clue wants happened to this motor in the past.

You are looking at it the right way I think. Not knowing hours or abuse you would at the very least inspect if not replace the crank so you don't lose a new topend. If you have a decent shop nearby to bore it and can get a crank etc. local a full rebuild would be a good idea and with an SBT crank should be $500-$700 range. Being in Canada these parts would need to be sourced local though to avoid the high shipping cost I hear about. I would not put it on the credit card. You know your financial situation and have a ski to ride now. Put the SJ aside and save your $$ up till you can pay cash for a reliable (which equals fun) boat to ride. Enjoy your ride time with what you can afford and aspire for better tommorow. Have a great summer.

if the rest of the superjet is in descent shape and doesnt look like monkey fingers have been in it, id keep it. . throw it in the corner. tear it down and see what went wrong. is it a 650 or 701?

It's a 92 650. I really do like riding my 550 also. I'm built like a string bean so I really like that its lighter. It just needs a little more jam. Pipe and prop perhaps.

So I decided to send the motor to SBT and get a rebuilt one back. 700 bucks with shipping and gaskets is something I can swing. I am just going to hold off on doing anything to make my ski more pretty. I can always do it later.

I think i have a Ported big bore 650 top end somewhere id sell for $125+ shipping. Check and see if your crank is good and which way you wanna go.

IMO if your going to spend $700, don't do it on a 650. Make sure you get a 61x 701. Worth every penny.

On there website they have the 701s and 701x. It says the 701s fits a superjet. Can I run this motor with a stock 650 carb? I don't want to spend money on dual carbs right now.

save your pennies, if you are ok with letting the 550 go, sell it in season when you can get the most for it, Make a estimate on what the SN will cost and what you want to do with it, flatwater and crusing etc. And use the money for one of Jetmaniac's 718 engines. He also take cores for cases and cranks..Good luck

my opinion is simple. SELL THE FREAKN KAWI. Focus on the YAMI. These engines are VERY VERY BASIC. Ship the crank to Jet maniac and get a rebuilt SBT crank and a complete top end plus gaskets from him. If needed get a cheap used stock head or better yet a milled stock head for higher compression. Find a local machine shop to bore your cylinder 1 over.
pay no more than $50 per hole.
crank $199
Gaskets $50
milled head $60
Pistons / rings / wrist pin bearings $200 maybe
Shipping all around to CA. prolly $75
$600 brand new motor
Disassemle carefully watching how everything goes together. Have someone here walk you through re-assembly. I would be glad to help if you like.
Now you know what you have and can focus next on pipe, prop, enhancer, footholds, carter B rocker kit and so forth and feel comfortable doing so.

700 to get another 650 to drop into your super jet ? yeowch .. really you need to pull that engine out pull it apart inspect it see what it needs .. if the crank is good get a top end kit and with a rebore should be more than about 200 or so for the kit and 100 to rebore .. so beteen 300 and not much more than 400 maybe .. but how about fining yourself a 701 ? ,,, shortblock off the boards maybe 500 or 600 plus shipping ? if you want to do it cheaper .. I have a top end here I can sell you a 650 top end with pistons .. it "should' be good with just a hone .. maybe new rings compression was about 135 to 140 when pulled .. but a fresh hone and rings can get that up a bit higher I would think $100 .. ohh and I als have another 650 top end it is opened right up .. .. the exhaust ports and intakes .. bought it at wavedaze didn't compression check it but prev owner said it should have good compression .. I can sell you this one for $130 both sets complete with used pistons and rings ths one also was bolted onto a 61x bottom end but your intake manifold from your 6m6 wont bolt on it .. I can add it at $20 extra if you want it though ... AND you are also in Canada so shipping will be reasonable will also send a 650 head if you need it .. just add 10 bucks shipping from Ontario .. I am going to guess maybe $25 if its more I will refund the difference if you r interested let me know

the ported 650 I have is a deal I think .. it has more than that into it in the porting .. its going to make notable power gains compared to a stock 650 I mean especially if you use the 701 61x bottom case,,,, another option is look for a good deal on a waverunner .. I have found some at 400-500 mark running great and some have 701s .. buy one use the engne and you will have a spare set of electronics maybe even a sj pump midshaft ect depending on waverunner model ..

Being in Edmonton Alberta Canada with economy booming the way it is. Boring and honing a used cylinder costs around 100 a hole because I phoned around. Buy the time I buy an ship this part and buy and ship that part whats an extra 100 bucks to have it built for me. Waverunners start around 2000 and only go up so going a 701 that route isn't worth it and then I still have to rebuild a motor because a used motor is still a used motor. If I went the jetmanic route and bought a 718 can I even run it with a single carb? I only play on flat water and the wake from my buddies supreme wake/surf boat. From the riding I did do on it even with a worn out poor running motorI was happy with the power. My ski is piped and also has a hooker prop and a mild scoop intake grate I also know when I get together with xjcrawler and truerider411 and friends. At some point I will take one of there skis for a rip and that will be the start of building a custom ski or buying one because they are becoming more common on the used market around here.
