What's with all the molds for sale

I see superfreak and hurricane are both selling off thier molds.

Hopefully they go to a good home.. And hopefully this is just because they have something new/better on the way!

I'd say they're just trying to sell them for something while they're worth something. They are either not making anymore or planning to or have been replaced with newer generation hull designs.

I know I’ll be flamed for this but I’m honestly surprised they sell as many AM hulls as they do. Not them but the industry as a whole. I mean most of them go for as much as, or often more, as a complete rtr superjet. Most of us know how much fiberglass or carbon costs. I realize there’s lots of R&D and mold cost in building and manufacturing hulls but those are a fixed costs. I know it doesn’t cost anywhere near these prices to make a hull. (Especially overseas, but not gonna name any names lol) I think a decent quality AM hull in the 3-5k price range would be a great seller and good for the industry.

You mean like a phantom? Still the nicest infusion I've seen, and possibly the cheapest modern flatwater hull out there... Not to mention the $3,500 vacuum bagged glass versions like I rode for years!

It takes enough time to make one that I'm pretty sure the maker wants to make enough off it to, well you know, eat and pay their bills.

just invest in one of the mold kits and show us how it can be done?

You have to admit it's a little ironic to be saying this when you are literally on a thread about the availability of the molds to make the hulls.

There will never be a better opportunity to put money where the mouth is.

I figured I'd get these kind of responses. I don't have any interest in trying to produce any hulls. Other than maybe a one off for personal use. And I know how long this kind of stuff takes, it is very time consuming. That being said, I don't see why a couple guys in a shop couldn't produce 2-3 a week once they had the molds and the process down. For it to really be profitable, you need to have cheap laborers do it for you, like in Thailand. If it cost even 1k materials for a glass hull, 7k sale price that's 6k profit. Sell it for 4k, that's 3k profit and sell X amount more.

I just brought it up because the topic of the sport declining came up. Whenever I bring it up to people they usually say first, wow do they still make those? Then it's, can you do a backflip? I then explain no, A. I don't have the skill, which is largely because B., those setups cost 2-3x + as mine. Then they're usually dumbfounded what the prices are like.

Yamaha can turn a profit at 8600, motor and all. They produce what? 500 a year? It's an economy of scale for sure, it would be hard to sell 500 AM hulls a year. Chicken and the egg kind of deal I guess, no current demand for that many units but I believe there would be if it were more affordable and it was popularized.

I just like to look at the grand scheme of things. Someone is in the market for a toy and willing to spend 15-20k. For that money, one could get 2 new superjets, a fully loaded couch (hell no, but people do), RZR 1000, multiple dirtbikes, or even a used 400hp corvette. Hell, I just about see more 6k sparks at the lake than anything else. And these are no assembly required, most people can't or won't build something themselves.

I just think the sport has dwindled to a point where few people know about it and few are willing to spend the money to build one themselves. The ones who are, have been involved in it for years, already have skis and are at a later point in life. I think the root of it all is the demise of the 2 stroke (thanks EPA) and the transition to larger and larger couches that people can drive to a dealer and buy turn key.

Like I said, I knew I'd get flamed. But I just think a large part of the reason the sport is dwindling and getting few new people into it can be traced to it's cost and the amount of competition in the market.

Lmao, put up or shut up dude. You gotta be a kid or a troll. "I could do it but I just have no interest." Yeah, I get it. I could have been a rockstar, had no desire to though.

You make it sound like putting up 5k+ and hundreds of man hours to chop, glass, and test 20 times for R & D automatically gives you something sweet then you just pay a few kids a loaf of bread a week and off you go running to the bank making top quality flatwater hulls for 3k and the sport is saved.

One thing you got right is your figuring on the responses. That should pay the bills while youre busy designing

To each their own. I'm glad somebody makes them and I'm glad people spend the money to buy them new so I can buy them used!

Looking forward to see what's next.

What is the last new hull to come on the market?

Helium?
C3? (is that even the newest hurricane? I see they're not selling ALL of thier molds so hopefully still in the game)
Maybe some tigercraft?

Damn you take it so personal. First of all don’t use quotes on something I didn’t say. I said I’d do it for personal use, this is a hobby and it would be a good project. Forget I mentioned any prices or how much it should cost or whatever. The only reason I mentioned it was because selling few hulls was brought up. And I said it’s probably because of the price of the hobby overall. I think that can definitely be agreed upon as a factor.

I don't have any interest in trying to produce any hulls.

Yet you have a business plan laid out but forget your math cause I took it personal and you weren't gonna build a hull anyways.

Whatever dude! Entertainment ain't free but the internetxs cheap. I'm early on the list to buy old internet molds too!
