That is the exact thought that prompted me to pay off my vehicle years ago and stay payment free ever since.

The trick is to buy good solid vehicles to start with and then keep up the maintenance.

I've done pretty good on my purchases so far. My 04 Cummings Dually was the only one that really cost me money in the last 15 years but it was an ex oil field truck and a flat out bad decision on my part.

I purchased my 02 Dodge 1500 for $7K and drove it for 200k miles.

I then bought a low mileage, single owner 03 for $4500 and drove it for almost 4 years. This one was the real dissapointment as it had probably 8-10 more good years left in it. Unfortunately, it was recently totaled. :(

Who knows with my current truck. It was lady driven and lady maintained which means she put gas in it and that is about it. I got a good enough deal on it but it's been lots of little things and a couple big things to get it back up to OCD standard.

I always think it would be nice to have something new or newish, but can't quantify buying a vehicle over $10k and being happy missing out on other awesome things in life. Like jetskiing, travelling, or being ale to go out and have a nice evening with my girlfriend.

Exactly why I roll in a 97 Chevy with bullet holes and no door handles. I've got these kids who work for me buying $50k trucks then have no money to pay their bills or buy food and still live at home. Talk trash to me in the morning about my truck and then go without food for lunch. I just laugh. They'll learn one day.

Ever since gas dropped below 3$ a gallon truck prices have skyrocketed.. I am looking at half ton crew cab 2004-2006 trucks with over 100k miles for 16k+ When 6 years ago those same trucks with 60k miles would have only been 10-12k.. So instead I dropped 600$ into the old Jeep XJ with a full tune up, new exhaust, cat, sensors etc and will keep driving her for a while.

They will indeed. I had two fully built and lifted Jeep Wranglers when I was in my early 20s and had healthy car payments, not to mention insurance on those things. I lived on ramen mostly in those days. haha

I'd like to have an XJ always loved them!

Was my moms daily driver since '99. She upgraded to a Toyota suv and gave me the jeep to tow my skis. Even after owning it for 2 years or so I still don't know what people see them in. Other then you can pick them up cheap and they seem to bullet proof. I did take it out to some pretty deep snow and out of all the fancy lifted high dollar broncos and diesel trucks etc I was the only one that didn't get stuck. lol
