When did footholds come out?

So I was watching Extreme Machines on the History Channel today and they were doing a special on boats. I believe the show was made in the late 90's and part of the show was on standups. They had Lloyd Burlew riding freestyle on a roundnose. He was doing your typical flatwater tricks with the occassional barrel roll and he mentioned that barrel rolls were the latest and greatest trick out and that it would be setting the standard for freestyle. From the looks of it, it appeared he was riding without any footholds or lifters.

Anyways I figured by then footholds were already being made or people had at least started making their own from scratch. So what's the history behind footholds? Who and when started making their own and then what company and when did they first start mass producing footholds?

It started with lifters, I forget who was the first, but shortly after the lifters came out, people starting chopping up skis.

If I remember correctly Lloyd told me he was the first or one of the first to build his own footholds or cutouts from the tray. He said it was not legal at the time, and I think he got Dq'd. Not sure what year that was or when they made it legal to do footholds.

Im really surprised how long it was before they started figuring out ways to hold themselfs in.... the sport evolved pretty fast once it got going.

Im sure someone here knows the story better then me.

I will claim "first" footstrap (until some else can prove earlier) for my buddy who took the rear toe strap off an old waterski and mounted it on his 650SX around '91.

The first time I pulled a sub on that POS I nearly killed myself.

I would say 96-97. One of the early Rick Roy videos showed them when he was talking about his setup. The first ones were just the rectangle toe holds if I am not mistaken.

No footholds gave way to lifters and straps which gave way to square holes in the gunwales finally arriving at what we have now: shoe-shaped holes in the ski.

Where do we go from here and how do we get there?

I say it goes full circle and folks go back to style/finesse vs strapping in.....kinda like wake skate. (Probably not, but it would be cool to see)

Everything runs in cycles!

someone once told me they used air tanks on the skis in Waterworld so they could do deeper subs without the ski running out of air. But this person thought he knew more than he actually did about skis. I doubt that was the case but it is an idea...

Not foot hold related, but I was trying to think up a way to do a two stage pump, low stage feeding a high stage, so you could ride through white water better.
