Sold my 88 650sx and I'm buying a 1990 superjet SN. Its obviously going to get a new paint job (haha wait for the picture..) I work at a vinyl shop and my boss's dad owns a Body shop so it will get paint and freshly designed vinyls ;). I haven't picked it up yet. Hopefully this friday after i get paid!

I'm not 100% on what it already has in it. I know it has the 650 motor being a 90. New impeller, I don't know the pitch. Not sure about intake grate or ride plate ( probably stock). Has footwells in it and a new hydro-turf mat set made for the footwells that i need to put on, but i need to wait for after the paint job for that correct?

I joined up to research what people are doing for the last week or so, but i have not been able to decide were to start!

(Didn't have gas in it, but sprayed a shot of carb cleaner and it fired. So it runs!)

Where did you start?

Most start by upgrading to a 701 motor. You can find a donor ski such as an older VXR pro, wetjet 701, raider 701 or other yamaha 701 based skis. Then you can bump compression, new exhaust, MSD ignition and so on. It all depends on your budget and overall goals.

i would think going through the work of finding one that had a decent motor would be ridiculous. And living in western kansas where not many people know what stand up jet ski's are. I have the first SN SJ anyone seen besides the guy that im buying it from and he never put it in the water. No ones seen it yet! What about just rebuilding up the 650 motor? Ebay has some 701's but the fact that its ebay...

Doesn't matter if they know what a stand up is or not, most of the ski's nightrider05 is describing are all sit downs and very common. You might have to drive to Wichita or KC to find something, but they are out there. Even if you find a motor that needs some work, parts are fairly common and there is plenty of instruction on this site if you are inclined to perform the work yourself.

Cool Kansas native kinda! I might just run with this 650 this summer. I'm fine to jack around with other stuff and work for a motor this winter right? Or is it frowned upon to work on other aspects of the ski without the new motor

No, but why spend tons of money repainting it and worrying about the body? Just for looks?

You will get the most speed and overall improvement per dollar out of your ski by dropping a 701 in there. If you g o and buy a 650 pipe, 650 head, and everything you will just have to lose it when you get a 701.

get it running and start riding. from there you'll have a better idea what to do next. like others have mentioned, don’t mod the 650. save the $$ and put it towards a 701.

All the 701 pipes I've used work fine on a 650 motor as well so if you don't feel like doing a motor swap this summer you could install a pipe that you can use when you put in a bigger motor.

I don't see what's wrong with the current paint, it's pretty bitchin.

Free mods first! D cut ride plate, quicksteer mod and cut a bit out of your stock intake grate

First things first, ride the pig until it is holding back your ability. Learn to master the turn, throttle, etc. At that point either upgrade the engine/steering or get a RN.

I ride a SuperFrk WannaBe
When I first started riding 2 years ago, I had a 650 on my sq. It was a freakin blast to ride. It came with protec pipe, msd enhancer, solas impeller, and a couple other things. A year later I got a 701 and every part from the 650 bolted directly on the 701. So if you have a little change thats burning your pocket, go ahead a mod the 650. Everything with swap right over. But word of advise, dont ride another person's ski with a 701. Because you will be trying your hardest to buy one , after the comparsion!! I think your first mod should be getting rid of your pole. For about a hundred bucks you could find a rn pole on this site. Then you could shorten that pole. That made a huge difference for me.

I have picked up many 701 based skis in project form for next to nothing...ranging from free to only a couple hundred...and they weren't hard to find at all.

I personally wouldn't build a 650...But thats just from personal experience. You will be wanting more and very quickly...then you will be kicking yourself in the butt for spending money on your 650, when that money could have went towards a 701 motor or 701 motor upgrades.

haha my friend has an fx1 with the 701 so its already to late for that! first thing i rode was a kawi 750 about stock. Stood right up and i never had troubles riding. next day rode the 701. then bought my cousins 650 kawi for 400$ just to have something to keep riding on. If everything bolts right up on a swap all i need to do is avoid building the 650 motor up and just stick with bolt ons and what not.

Yep that's right. You could could get a good impeller, scope grate, d cut your ride plate, get a shorten pole. and your set without touching your motor
