When it's flat, I don't mind running some buoys or carving some marsh trails at all and my buddy lives on the waterway. We had a blast when the huge cruisers were heading South for the Winter and the big Coast Guard boat even set up the best wake of the day. I should have a flatwater ski soon, at least my version of it that will hopefully pull a flip off a set up wake and I can't wait to try it out.

Surf rules though, and even a 10 foot stab with the Coast Guard cheering can't compare to a day of clean waves.

Comparing Surf riding to Flat water riding is like comparing Apples to Oranges. In order to even do the majority of the flat water tricks you need a very expensive specialized ski that's damn near un-ride able for anything else, and Race skis are just as specialized, In the Surf every ski is fun, even a 300sx or a couch

I ride in the great lakes which has both. I can tell you that I know what days we are waiting for and what days are just for sitting on the beach chillin or riding to the bar. Its not even close with the Great Lakes riders..WE WANT SURF!

Pretty much anyone who has the access and ability for both would choose surf. A wave thats different everyday keeps us entertained far longer...more fun = more danger = more injury divided by being smart+common sense = surf FTW .... .surf>boatwakes>flat what ever is avail and popin that given day

I love riding Flatwater with the right setup but when I get to ride surf, i consider it a treat... Both require different skill... I can barrel roll, monkey jump, backflip, ect... but a clean re-entry in good surf is f-ing HARD! imo ...got a lot of respect for the surf... It's almost killed me... I can't say that about Flatwater.

It's kinda like trail riding or racing a mx bike. Both have their pros and cons, safety, enjoyment, etc as well as their own skill set. But opposite as far as price, surf requires a lot less expensive ski than flatwater.

But in my opinion I'd rather ride surf anyday.

Surf has so many more elements to it, wave height/speed/spacing. I love it it wish i could ride it every day. Like stated above you can take a stockish 701 sn in the surf and just shred for days.

That being said i would like to build a flatwaterish boat that gets to see the surf.

Where I live its all saltwater riding because the few inland lakes we have don't allow motors. My 2nd time ever riding a ski we went out into the ocean during a storm riding waves the size of ranch houses. It was crazy just being out there in the rollers going up and down 15-20 ft. Luckily i stayed away from the break or i would of been crushed along with my dads friends ski!! Adrenaline and fear pumping through your veins I have been soo addicted since. Now I'm on my 3rd ski and still searching for the huge wave days! Flatwater could never do that to me. I hate having to travel across the bay to get to the waves now. waste of gas!!!

So you can see my bias here.....yeah its cool to see these guys on their 30k dollar skis doing all kinds of flips and spins but to the guys doing that in the surf, there is no comparison. $$$ can buy you a superlight powerful ski set up for that, but you can't buy huge balls!
