Think what you want. The facts are they can't afford it, and the ones that can don't care about it enough to jack with it, because they're too busy doin' and slangin dope. I know and grew up around too many people from the projects to not know. It's already been mentioned numerous times in this thread that it's a cultural issue, and it is, plain and simple. These families are poor, "lower class" families, and they don't raise their kids the same way our parents raised us. It's that simple. They are brought up learning on their own how they're going to feed their faces, and because of their surroundings and influence, how they're going to sell dope and keep spinners on their escalades, not how to hold down a job and keep a ski on the water.

Generalization at it's finest.

Thanks for the motivation! you ever go to any events ? Would enjoy riding with ya at Daytona in Jan.

No offense, but I think you missed the meaning of his post. Which is one of the main reasons why I think threads like this are stupid (as well as no offense to the author), Threads like this, where it calls into question racial profiling regarding specifics like this, it's very difficult to decipher words typed on a screen. Original meanings and ideas can get misconstrued and misunderstood, very easily. Just as Darrin stated: "Generalization at it's finest.". A perfect example of my point.

If the thread is so stupid, why do you have half the posts in it?

I can't believe this thread is still going.... The facts are that minorities typically don't have access to or the funds for swimming lessons. If families cannot afford swimming lessons, then how are they to afford watersports? If you grow up with no background or exposure to something, you are likely to not have an interest in it. Example: I grew up not watching football. Now that I am older, I have no interest in watching football. This in not a rule, of course there are going to be outliers in anything.

I grew up with no exposure to boats, skis, kneeboards etc, we did have a pond and access to public swimming pools so I did learn how to swim, I now work on Jet skis for a living and have since 1999, my sons have been exposed to jet skis, boats, skis kneeboards, motorcycles, four wheelers etc since childhood and care nothing about any of it. I guess I am one of your outliers.

Offroadie

Living the dream.
The question is not whether or not any given family or group of people can "afford" to take swimming lessons or not. The real question is... How can anyone really afford NOT to take swimming lessons?

It's a survival skill. My family and my wife's family thought it was pretty damn important and consequently they made whatever sacrifices necessary to insure that we learned to swim.

Hmm, I see your point. I mistakenly made generalizations. Looking over my life, I have many interests that I was never exposed to as a child also.

After doing a little googling, I found a nice news article that seems to make sense to me. It's explanation seems to point to it being a hold over from segregation and swimming not becoming part of African-American's cultural recreation. If this is true, then in the next 10-20 years I would expect more minorities to become proficient swimmers and enjoy watersports as more incorporate it into their lives.
