650/X-2 x2 runs great then looses power

yep pulled it all so the tank was completely open. My buddy just scored a keihin sudco 42mm for 120 bucks with a bore matched intake manifold so well soon find out if it WAS in fact a carburetion issue.

I had a 650sx with more or less the exact same problem. Rebuilt the carb and a few cheap things then ended up upgrading to a 750 so I never figured out what the problem was. As I tore down my 650 engine the engine itself looked fine and had ok compression but a lot of the components - head, jugs, crank case were all seized together from salt water/probably overheating. I thought that somehow may have caused a problem. I also would have liked to try new electrics looking back on it. Kind of seems like maybe some of the electrics could have been overheating because it would run well for the the first little bit. Be carefull about throwing to much money into a 650 trying to fix it

swap out the CDI. runs great when cold, but when it heats up ,it runs like crap. cools back down enough to rip for a second and then heats back up to run crappy again.it sounds like you are :deadhorse: with the fuel problem. try electrical

Have you checked for water in the tank or anywhere in the fuel path? Dump the last quart of fuel into a jar and let it sit for a few minutes to check for water. Could be electrical too but eliminate the possible water issue for sure.

Ill try swapping it with the one in my 650sx. I still feel like its fuel because once it bogs, if you rapidly pull and release the throttle it will jump on plane rip balls and then crap out again. We are heading out to folsom in the tornado right now to see if the new carb makes a difference. It runs tits on the trailer which is also why I was thinking fuel. when my cdi started to take a dump it was pretty obvious even when the ski was out of the water.... thanks mark

Wanderer- pretty confident theres no water in the fuel, but ill double check. thanks

I was pretty confident too till i drained the tank and guess what i found at the bottom

So yesterday, same problem. left the shore and was running awesome for about 3 solid minutes. Then it started acting up again. I swapped cdi's with my 650sx, ran exactly the same. heres what I know is good:

New carb, with fresh rebuild pulled off a running x2
fresh head gasket.
cdi is working properly
all fuel lines are good/ petcock is bypassed.
tank is venting properly

I'm going to drain whats left of the gas and pour in all fresh fuel. Yesterday at the end of the day i noticed one of the exhaust manifold bolts had water seeping out of it. I pulled it off and the gasket looks very suspicious, and an exhaust leak would definitely explain whats going on. I'll also swap in a new one and see where that gets us. thanks for all the help/sugestions fellas!

Yes. A stator can get weak.

It carries electricity. Anything that does such can develop resistance and produce low or slow voltage.

What pipe do you have? B-pipes with open top holes can let water into the cylinder from the injection hole. Unlikely a problem but remove the pipe and hook up the hose, make sure you don't have water coming out places it should.

Just reaching now... post a video.

Might as well do the stator while its out, but you won't know if it was an air leak or the stator if it fixes it

thats the plan. hopefully after this I wont need to post a video, but we'll see. thanks for all the help guys.
