SXR Xscream adjustable steering on an SXR problem...

I have been messing with this thing all evening and I finally gave up. I thought this would be a simple drop in part? I am totally confused and any pics or install tips are appreciated. I've done a lot of searching but havent found anything dealing with this problem of attaching the steering system to a stock SXR pole.

Here's where I'm at...notice the plate doesnt even hit the bump stops??? Its like the little arms are too short....or the bump stop is too far away.

Secondly, I have some extra parts that I didnt use, such as the bolt that was holding the steering unit together when it came in the box, and I didnt need either bushing at all. I am betting that I have this installed all wrong but who knows...it turns smoothly and feels sturdy so I cant tell. But I do know I cant even test her out if the plate isnt even hitting the bump stops.

Very disappointed with the lack of instructions and at least they could include the 10 cent nut that holds the throttle cable attachment to the bracket.

Please help! I have already called and emailed xscream. Hope to hear back tomorrow.

Thanks,

Matt

I may be wrong here, but im pretty sure this steering system is for aftermarket handpoles only. I have never seen it on a stock pole before.

You guys could be right, but I thought I did my research before I bought this item...dang it!

Here is what it says on their own website:

XScream Adjustable Steering System

Product Description:
Made for riders by riders.... The new adjustable steering system is the last one you will ever need. It is adjustable from -2.5" to -3.5" and incorporates a unique large stainless steel thrust bearing.. The steering cable arm/pivot is adjustatble to provide the smoothest steering response and allows the rider to fine tune the desired amount of "quick-turn". This system does not discriminate, it works on Yamaha or Kawasaki. Comes complete with straight bars.

Specify smooth ends (for ODI locking grips) or knurled ends.

____________

And they include two bushings, one for the Xscream pole and one for "OEM". It was hand written on the receipt in the box, and the Xscream pole bushing was taped to it.

Confused....

No problem...I guess I will just need to talk to them tomorrow. Its not looking good that this will work without some kind of modification. Guess I will need to put the stockers back on tomorrow....sux!

I don't think these work on stock sxr poles. Xscream works pretty much only on yamaha based gear (except for cables, bushings, etc). However, they will definitely help you out, so don't worry.

You can relocate that sub plate bolt to the hole that is 1" closer to the steering stops. I drilled and tapped my hole, or TBM makes a bolt.

This works on stock poles. At least a stock square nose pole, because I have it on mine.

Its a tricky sob to setup, getting it to hit the stop is tricky. You set the quick steer adjustment only a thumbs width out from the steering clamp. I have the cable adjustment pretty much all the way at the end. Keep messing with it, you will get it, and LOVE IT.

edit; in your pic you definitely have the quick steer adustment too far out

This sounds encouraging...!

What about the big bolt that sticks out which I am attached to now with the castle nut...did you have to cut it flush?

Yeah the SN must be different...even if I disconnect the quick steer bracket, the bars will spin all the way around because the turn plate arms are too far away from the bump stop. It looks like I will have to change mounting locations for it to reach, as Subhard suggested.

I know I will love it, gotta make it work!

I just went through this on my 750 sx, emailed xmetal and Rick told me that it was designed for aftermarket poles and not stock Kawi poles, he offered to refund my money and even said if I sent it back I could keep the straight bars for my trouble. I decided to keep it and make it work as it was way too close. I ended up cutting down the pivot bolt and drilling a 3/8 hole through the center and then used a 3 inch bolt and nyloc nut to hold it all together. You could also drill the large washer with the step machined in it to slide over the pivot bolt and use the stock nut. I have pics and will post tonight. Rick too me that when they get back from the world finals he would get a stock Kawi setup and do the r&d to make the pieces to make it work and offer it in a kit. I am supper happy with this setup even though it wasn't a bolt on.

Rick just got back with me and has confirmed the Xscream adjustable steering system will not currently work with the OEM Kawi SXR pole, unless modified. I am going to take a look at it again this afternoon and see if I can make it work.

Any pics of the guys that have done this would be great to see!

Thanks Jon!!! I will take a look and hopefully be back on track for this weekend.

I would also like to add that Xscream has been great and has offered a full refund plus a discount on a future order. They also plan to update their website to be more specific as to what units this steering will bolt right up too. Rick also mentioned a new kit they are planning inthe near future that will allow a direct fit to the OEM pole.

Excellent service and many thanks to all those in the forum who have helped and replied in this thread.

The older sx sub plate (the piece that your turn plates mounts to) already have the hole but its not threaded ,so this combo with tbm pivot bolt is a great alternative to drilling yours .because not only does it move the mount point forward one inch allowing the stops to work it will tuck the turn plate under the chin pad so theres no way to hit it and this allows you that much more forward adjustment.. i sold the boat i had running like this (07 sxr)otherwise i would snap a pic.contact wat-con (john zigler) here on the x see if he has a line on that sub plate think it was off a 95 sx that i used if not mistaken. a little footwork and you will be pleased.
