Yet another square nose restore

So about two weeks ago I was browsing craigslist and clicked on an add titled old Yamaha jet ski. I clicked on the add. It read old Yamaha stand up jet ski. No pictures. no phone number. No price. I emailed the guy my number and he actually called me pretty quick. Ski hydrolocked 3 years ago and sat. He didn't know what model but he said it was a stand up, and it said Yamaha on the side. He also said it was an early 80s model lol. I asked him how much and he said 100$. I said im on my way. I was secretly hoping it was an fx1 but when I arrived I found a sad little square nose rotting in the woods. Its a 1990 with aftermarket graphics.

So I yanked the 650 that was in it. Locked up TIGHT. Starting search for a donor ski. I found a 94 vxr pro with a title for 180$ non running. I get there and it has 140 psi in one hole and 20 in the other. Crank spun nicely, had strong spark, and came with a new AGM battery. Took it home and was impressed how easy Yamaha make its. Took me 15 minutes start to finish to get the motor on the bench. Ordered a new top end for the motor. Its still original bore. IMG_0753.jpg IMG_0772.jpg IMG_0778.jpg IMG_0782.jpg IMG_0782.jpg

I ordered foot holds from 24/7. Got carbon fiber from us composits to reinforce the engine bay. I plan to build my own pancake pete foot hold. I also think im going to try and shorten the stock pole. I think I can do it at least 2 inchese without compromising structure. I don't have the money for a round nose pole or aftermarket at the moment, so I figure I can do this for cheap and just run it until it inevitably breaks. I mocked the foot holds in place. Im going to rivet and glass them in hopefully today. Then need to clean sand and clean some more inside the engine bay to lay the cf. IMG_0784.jpg IMG_0785.jpg

I would love to hear the final amount of money put into this thing. Great project, good luck!
If everything goes as "planned" ill be somewhere in the 750$ range and that includes spending a decent amount of money on graphics. I'm trying to toe a line between keeping costs down, but not being so cheap that its not done right. I know I can pick 2 of fast, cheap, or reliable and I chose to go with a stock 701 so im hoping to get cheap and reliable haha and just enjoy it for what it is. Its my first superjet ive only owned kawi stand ups prior so im sure I will love it no matter how it turns out.

Looks good!

I may be trippin' balls, but are those footholds backwards? And how did you order them from 24/7? I thought they were out of business a long time ago.

I thought the same thing about them being backwards but figured I'd make myself look stupid saying something like that

Haha I think you're tripping. They do have a nice dip in so your ankles can fit into the tray a little bit too. A guy actually owns the molds and makes them now. He sells them on ebay CHEAP. Hes also on the SXR superjet facebook page. His name is Mark Erickson. Super nice guy great to work with.

You're 100% sure that they aren't backwards? haha

When I put footholds in my squarenose I had to modify them a ton to make them fit properly because of how the rear steps up. Those looks like they went in relatively smooth.

They weren't bad. There def was a little modification but I think it was because they're for a round nose. Once I shave off the extra foam and glass them I think they will look pretty good

Dang...you should ripped out the tray and removed all the old foam and sealed it up. I bet that ol girl is waterlogged.

Great find...even if you get to $1K you'll still come out on top! GLWB!

No the tray is dry as a bone. I can def tell you how light it is. And when I was scraping for the foot holds it was super dry. Def more work than I would want to do at the moment. I'm still trying to get a good riding season out of her.

Got my top end. Was super excited to put it together. Got both correct pistons, but two dif sets of rings.... was pretty surprised I couldn't get the rings to fit then I realized they were wrong. Pretty frustrating but hoping I can get it corrected. I freshly honed the head and everything. Just coated it in fogging oil for now to keep it fresh . Guess I'll continue on with cosmetic stuff. It's been superrrr rainy and super cold here so I don't want to lay glass just yet.
