I'm no fan of a tight pole either. I'll catch hell, but I think it has been spawned by flatwater tricking.
I like the pole to move with me, without effort....I don't want to think about it.
(I only ride surf)
On the other hand, I must disagree about weight, back issues and control.
Granted: TOO short a pole is misery. However, (related to a stock sj) A pole cut 2 or 2.5" in combination with a steering system and straight bars equals approx. -5 or -6".
It all depends on your body type; But having had back issues myself, I found this to be a blessing. I have rarely felt discomfort as prior and have opened up my riding to a new level on the face. (except for pearling).
The ski turns better and...just performs better when you're riding it instead of dragging behind it.
Get forward. Don't drag.
I think you'll find a new ski beneath you.
