If you ride every type of water including flatwater, I would say a short flatwater hull like a rickter xfs or equivalent would be best. Not best for huge surf but I like mine in 10 footers and chasing boat wakes. A bigger hull is going to suck for flat water and small boat wakes/surf.

I think it's more the shape of the bottom rather than the weight. The phantoms and chans land hard too and heavy ones.

You can just pull off the intake grate and put a bead of silicone along the rubber seal. That will tell you for sure if that's the problem and if it is , it actually lasts a long time. I've done it more than once
