I think you're going to find the axle might bend with that much spacing.
Worst case the wheels bow in too far and rub the hull. One length of tube (pipe) may be needed instead or in addition to sleeve the rod.
Then again you may have used thick enough rod it's not an issue. Didn't see u say...
6" won't be too bad.. should work fine for hard pack (daytona like) or wet sand. For soft sand you may find you have too much weight for such a small footprint but you can play with air pressure. Worst case you need two people to drag any great distance across a beach.
For the axle I'd do alum...
Not as big but may be a better option... plastic rims- not as heavy, won't have rust & bearing issues.

What matters is if you have fun doing it, not what outsiders think. The same could be said for every sport/activity if if you want to generalize.
True, but they still need to be aware of the problem and impacted percentages. Are they even aware?
Maybe then they'll step up and offer a solution to those that bought and are running into issues.
