I went riding Thursday evening after work and 5 minutes in my gas cap AND threads on the filler neck just snapped off and went down to Davy Jones' locker. I fixed that and had every intention of riding the 550 today. Even adjusted the steering cable cause it felt a bit off to the left. Well got...
I rehabbed a Seadoo GSX fuel system, and resealed the ride plate and pump shoe.
I fixed the broken filler neck on my 550
I powerwashed out the bilges in a couple skis that had oil all in them.
And I told some customers how to operate THEIR OWN jet skis!
Then shove the neck on in, tighten the large plastic nut on the backside, shove the fill hose on and clamp it. If I can get my real working MAN hands in there and accomplish it........you can too! All done, nice sturdy filler neck.
The 'Doo filler neck has a couple of these little tabs to locate it in the hull. We don't need them in the way so I just used a cutoff wheel and removed them. A razor knife or hacksaw blade will also work. You can just see some grinding marks in front of my thumb where the tab USED to be.
Since the 'Doo neck is a tiny bit larger, the hole needs opened up. I used a carbide on the die grinder but a dremel would work as well. The black sharpie line is where I opened it up to. I shoved the shop vac hose in there and ran it while I was cutting.
The 'Doo neck is slightly larger than the original. Well, so is the gas tank but they managed to make the hose fit that. I used my handy little heat gun to soften up the end then smeared a tiny amount of grease in and shoved the 'Doo filler neck in it. I continued working the neck around to...
Since the filler neck on these old things seems to be made out of recycled milk jugs, mine broke off yesterday about 5 minutes into our ride. Good thing I had the 650sx fueled up too! Anyway, I caught a stick or something in the pump (recent floods pushed crap from the creeks into the lake) lost...
I know.....WTF is up with that? First I rmember hearing the classic car guys talking about back when I was a teenager........"My old '70 Camaro had an LT1 and it wasn't anything like this...." Now I'm that guy, thinking NO....the LT1 was another version of TPI, that things an LS LOL!!
All the manufacturers make some nice stuff.......and they all make some garbage too. I use to always be a die hard GM guy, but over the years I've found good deals and owned a lot of different makes. I've come to the conclusion you NEVER want the first or even second year of a new production...
Have you ever had these starters apart? They're not too difficult, but do take a bit of finesse to re-assemble. Here's a pic of one disassembled. https://www.x-h2o.com/threads/550sx-to-750-all-or-nothing-build.208950/post-2149832 See that broken brass? It goes on either side of the square...
Just get a cheapo flycutter and a piece of tool steel. Set it up and spin the drill by hand until you know it's centered. Adjust the cutter out a tiny bit and cut! Then again..........I have a real mill LOL!
After that I fit the intake grate and ride plate up. The ride plate was all good no issues. The intake grate needed some fine tuning. I'd guess for most folks a fat bead of silicone and mount it up is "Good Enough". Well, I don't do things like that. The edge of the pump shoe was making some...
