I decided to show my new wing pieces a little love , I say pieces I haven't started on the second one yet.

Anyway I found some aluminum plate to put on the bottom and front, I mixed up some epoxy-cabosil and bedded it into that, tomorrow I will do the other piece, then they will be glassed over.

The plan is to drill three holes in the plate and tap them to 6mm , on the top I will sink a piece of aluminum into the hull and drill and tap it, they shouldn't go anywhere, that last pic is for JC Superjet look a plastic dixie cup, the world is safe again.

i finished the shaping on the second piece and I ended up have to curve the piece on the end a bit to get it to fit, I used a ball peen hammer and a trailer ball as an anvil to get the right curvature in it , then I bedded it into the piece with cabosil epoxy.

I went ahead and marked and drilled the holes in the hull , after the plates are all glassed in I will mark them from under the bond line with a drill bit and drill and tap the holes.

I intend to work on this while keeping the ski ridable , I will completely finish this one then I will know exactly what to do on the second one. The duct tape forms a dam to keep the epoxy in place till it cures

Its finally dry enough to fool with , it's been really cool here for the last few days , I love the weather but the epoxy doesn't .

I wanted to sink a chunk of aluminum into the ski for an attachment point, so I did , the piece is probably 3/8" thick , I cut most of the hole out with a grinder and metal cutting disc and the rest with a hacksaw blade and dug the piece out .

I dug the foam out so it sits much lower than needed , put some Gorilla glue in there and put the piece back in , the piece already had a hole drilled in it so I used a drill bit to grab the inside of the hole and manipulate the piece where I wanted it , the Gorilla glue of course keeps expanding .

I quickly put the piece I had cut out back in the hull and used a piece of Aluminum plate and duct taped it to the hull to keep it in place, if it rises slightly above the surface no biggie , I will grind it and glass over it anyway.

I made patterns to cut the fiberglass cloth out of posterboard since I have another one to do as well , this mooring I laid up a layer of chop and vacuum bagged it , 3 more sides to go then I am doing the outside part in visual carbon fiber.

The hull piece I put back in was a tad high last night when I checked it , I tapped it back down with a ball peen hammer and it stayed put, I will Dremel out around the edges and fill it with epoxy-cabosil the lay two layers of glass over that .

I ground a vee into the edges with a drum sander on the dremel , taped it off with scotch tape , mixed epoxy and cabosil and pulled it with a business card . Pretty soon it will be just like Servicemaster, like it never even happened.

At this point I am ready for them to just do a hip replacement and be done with it , down time is supposed to be nothing, whatever it is I have spent longer than that on the couch already this year.

Pretty much on the last fiber glassing part on this piece , I bagged it a few times and depending on where the piece was it did great , however where it makes that 90 degree bend , that's not happening with what I have so the last couple of times I wrapped it in plastic wrap and put pieces in to hold the 90 degree part. here is the last one.

The plastic wrap works very well on the outside corners to hold everything till it dries.

Now it's just an assumption but I assume it stayed put just fine .

It's on the trash can so I could put it where ever the sun is at to dry ,the shade moves quite a bit here during the day.

It was dry enough to unwrap it, well almost anyway, I want to see if this whole bolt on setup was going to work or not so I set it in place and used some small scraps of turf to space it off the gunnel .

When I said I would never have a ski with footholds I guess I lied, because clearly that is some version of a foothold ..

I marked the holes, drilled them and tapped them to 6mm , I hit it dead on the money so I bolted it on to see what was what, there is an aluminum piece below the bond rail so the hull is now sandwiched between two aluminum plates , it seems really solid bolted down but it will get one more bolt put in at an angle into the gunnel, that's what I put the aluminum piece in the hull for.

I think I matched the angularity of the hull quite well and that last pic that's what it's all about and all that really matters .

Now all I have to do is do it all over again.

I am covering building the other wing-foothold , it's the exact same process , I am not covering making the tubbie here as it's all on the other thread , hopefully I can get far enough along on it to get it in the water this weekend and come back with a ride report next week.

Finishing off the other tubbie and blending it into the ski, yes I know I am jumping around again, around here it's called efficient usage of materials , if I have filler mixed up I am going to use it on something.

I am going to throw another pro tip out to you , when you have a nasty looking pull like this one obviously is , that's not the end of the story , with epoxy you have a long open or working time , if you catch it just right the filler is almost like modeling clay.

You can take wax paper or parchment paper in this instance , lay it over the top of it and now you can manipulate it to the shape you want it either with your fingers or in this case with the back side of a bondo spreader, I use the back side because it is thicker and will move more material.

The parchment paper won't stick and is easily removed after the epoxy cures, it makes the surface a lot smoother which means a lot less sanding.

You can also use this same trick with gelcoat to shape it.

In todays class we are going to cover microballoons and epoxy application techniques .

So I have already pulled this with thickened epoxy microballoons a couple of times and it's pretty close to where I want it , when it gets this close I really don't want to do another epoxy pull , so to avoid massive amounts of sanding I mix it up more soupy and apply it with a brush.

This takes a little bit of prep and that's where the packing tape comes in , I used it to make a dam at the bottom edge and left about a 1/2" at the top, front and back for fairing it in.

Then using a CAB (cheap ass brush ) I applied the mixture and let it flow out, as you can see it pretty much self levels and smooths out really well., then I folded the tape over the edge at the bottom , smoothed that out and let it cure, I will revisit that later today and see if I can get some sanding done.

You can also let it sit up a bit and cover it with wax paper or parchment paper and manipulate it slightly if you need to.

The goal here for the moment is to get it faired in and get a coat of high build primer on it so I can take it for a test run and see how it handles with the new tubbies installed.
