300/440/550 550sx Hull Modernization Build

Well I am curious because I was thinking about building my own as well, but haven't seen it done and am not an engineer. Any progress?

I was thinking of buying the brackets but I have a few tweaks to the design and don't really need the adjustability forward and aft integrated into the bracket - it will be part of the foothold itself! Think of it as a hybrid BOB/Rickter design.

After being able to ride in the surf for the last two weekends tho I'm not too concerned about the holds lol.

Yep - I was there Sunday on my 440, didn't get to ride until later on around 1:30 though because my kill switch wires were shorting out due to salt water so I had to diagnose that and then just disconnect them lol.

I would just buy the BOB foothold kit from the Ski Clinic in my opinion - I have seen it in person now and I can definitely say it is very well constructed, and you will easily spend the equivalent of $300 of your own time, money and supplies building a similar kit. Take if from me ;) The only reason I subject myself to the torture of building my own is because I like building stuff... for the sake of building it!

Major Milestone!!

Got the first coat of primer on it today! Wow there's alot of waveness! I think once the day glo yellow is on it - it will be harder to tell, but for now the white primer brought out ANY and ALL flaws!! going to have to block sand and do some body filler on it before I can call it ready for the color layer! Either way, pretty excited to finally be at this stage after a week of sanding after my full time job until 8:30 most nights!

You can see how I taped off areas not to be painted (engine bay is getting it's own paint - bilgekote, and tray is staying raw as it will be all covered with turf!)

And after the first coat of Interlux interprotect 2000E 2 part epoxy marine primer, thinned with M.E.K....

I start school this week, so this will be a weekend affair from here on out! I'm very happy I made it to this stage at least before going back to school, no more nightmarish nights until 3am fiberglassing in my basement!

First off, super impressive and inspiring... keep up the good work! Including all the great DIY remedies. Especially the "lathe" with high tech ON control.
Secondly, thanks for making me stay up late (when I should've been in bed hours before) reading through the whole thread thinking I would see a finished product by page 13.... lol. Can't wait until it is done!

Didnt see any one ask about the driveshaft tunnel mod. I'm trying to remember what mine looks like. Does this make that big of a difference?

It makes a noticeable difference in reducing cavitation especially when you start putting more power down with a ported reed motor or a 650 or 750

Going with pole breathers only. It's a small engine and I've read about people using only pole breathers on DASA builds without issue. Saves me the hassle of needing a hood baffle as well!

No progress in nearly the last month - Senior year Eng. courses have hit me with work like this perfect storm they're predicting!

No larger pump in this build - It's staying "550sx stock class" lol.

I'll save all that good stuff for a complete hull build - this was my first build remember!
